"Prospect" is another fine example of understanding the do's and don'ts of quality sci-fi on a budget. Simple practical effects, heavy on the dialog and drama, and lean hard into your story. This one is more of a Western with space suits, and it works pretty well.

Somehow satisfying film although it lacks depth in any one dimension. Characters, world building, and aesthetic are all good - the lack of offered exposition is what makes this special.

Pedro Pascal in a space helmet, helping a youngling on their mission to get back home. Hmmmmmm? Confirmed: Disney watches Netflix.

Low-key sci-fi with nice exposition-free world building. The plot is anything but spectacular, however the atmosphere alone makes it worth watching.

Alien-like analog aesthetic, lean storyline, never tries to be anything it isn't, good performances, good watch

it feels like episode 8 from the season 2 of a sci-fi channel show that never aired. it's really hard to make out what everything is all about with almost no exposition. the movie relies too much on atmosphere and the world building, and very little on actual story telling. pacing drags the movie down another notch. i don't want to be too harsh on young filmmakers, but it is what it is.

It works mostly because it's a slightly bizarre / retro sci-fi that doesn't spew out the basics. Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher are great and they are the primary reason why the movie gets a tick. A couple of the plot points are stupid; the natives (with clubs lol) should have been cut entirely.

Simply put, I was invested. That's pretty much all you can ask for from a film, especially in a genre like Sci-Fi that's so focused on world building. The plot and character development are a little on the thin side (which in some respects makes it feel more like a video game), but I really liked Thatcher and Pascal, plus the vibe of it all was just so on point that those negative elements become very easy to overlook. I really hope we end up getting more from this universe.

Very shallow worldbuilding. Apollo mission-level technology and ambiguous alien name-dropping make up the entirety of the atmosphere. Equally shallow lead, Pascal's character is the only one with any relative depth.

It felt like a space Western. The guts of the girl and the interactions reminding me of True Grit a little. It was interesting to see unfolding. The mystery of very unfamiliar technology and terms or world building they don't explain right away is a fun one that makes it also more realistic. But don't watch if you don't like the sound of loud panting and breathing; it lasts almost the entire movie.

A kind of TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE ON A MOON that benefits from Pascal's performance of a character written in a wordier way than has become usual for this kind of thing. The final scenes don't really achieve the tension necessary to count as a genuine climax, and the characters appearing in those scenes are rather more sketchily drawn, but for the most part this succeeds in sustaining interest as much as can be expected from this kind of low-budget space western.

I agree with jlewis that the lack of exposition aided the storytelling rather than detracted from it. I followed the plot okay, although I would suggest subtitles due to the future slang and technical vocabulary. The plot was slow at times (especially in the beginning), but overall the movie felt better than it should have been. Sophie Thatcher did an excellent job in her role.

Story is average but Prospect stands out for it's authentic feel for production design and refreshing aesthetically heterogeneous vision of the future.

A great deal of fun. The lead actress isn't able to build a whole lot into the role, and comes of fairly stiff as a result. Nonetheless, the care put into the world and art direction are enough to elevate this indie sci-fi adventure into the realm of the 'very good.'

I don't know why, but this movie was just boring to me. Started out promising (I'm a sucker for space stations with tech that looks like it's still in the 80s) but I was always waiting for the movie to start. I also like alien planet stuff, but there wasn't much of it happening here apart from the freakyshrooms, the dust and the things they were digging the diamonds out of. The relationship between the two main characters was pretty well-crafted, but overall the movie just felt bland to me.

I love these type of movies where you just dip straight in. No need to build up and explain everything of the new world. Just get the viewer to understand with clues from the context. Nice little gem.

The world building is a lot of fun. It’s just over an hour and half and it felt quick even for that. Overall, a great low budget sci-fi.

Innovative fresh slice of hard sci-fi that thrillingly recalls past breakout indie sci-fi hits like Pitch Black. Glorious photography, style and gently enticing worldbuilding. Respects the audience's ability to fill in the blanks and come to understand the reality of the situation and the world of the characters, rather than slamming them over the head with exposition like so many other bigger-budgeted efforts. Neat plot, engaging performances and total verisimilitude. Looking forward to more!

Solid enough small SciFi which I'll always welcome. Good leads, I imagine this movie had Pascal recommending Thatcher for Boba Fett. Not exactly "enjoyable" all the way through, but a good watch nonetheless. 6.3 for me.

The only thing that separates this from a western taking place in North Canada and a western sci-fi on another world is CGI spores and nonsensical space equipment. Boring story, zero characters to care about. Avoid.

Solid performances especially by Pedro Pascal. There are some kinda stupid moments and it’s borderline formulaic. But it succeeds as being this good mix of western and sci-fi which I think is really hard to pull off. B

SPOILER: so this annoying, gum chewing bloke and his daughter crash land in their steampunk space shuttle, and set out to walk to where they should have been (apparently they are trying to harvest some amber like stuff growing in sheeps intestines, or something). He gets shot, and the rest of the film is the daughters attempt to find another ship to get off the planet .. but I could be wrong, as its mostly unintelligible, made even more unintelligible by the fact that they were in space suits.

Another low budget sci-fi movie that pads out its runtime by setting the pacing too slow. This story succeeds on its worldbuilding, which I thought was done relatively well. If you don't enjoy worldbuilding, you will not enjoy this movie.

I want more of this world. A lot more. Sophie Thatcher, Pedro Pascal, & Jay Duplass all turn in good performances here, though Pascal is the standout. He actually made me sympathize with his character by the end, something that I didn't think he'd make look so easy. The plot is intriguing but not quite enough is ever explained, so while the world itself is fascinating & the lack of over-explanation was nice I felt a bit too in the dark about certain things. Overall, really cool watch.

Many extra points for the twisted space story and the beautiful Sophie Thatcher. Despite its small budget it delivers a solid Sci-Fi experience. Immersive and interesting throughout. The plot was suitably complex and it felt like they were treading a bit of new ground. It ended abruptly and left me wanting more. Worthwhile.

Hard to connect with the plot when they're in suits the entire time walking through the same forest. Sophie Thatcher was pretty non-emotive so she wasn't as interesting as Pedro Pascal, who channels the typical space pirate (but he was the best part about the film). Not much goes on plot-wise. Still, decent setting and atmosphere. Fav scene: the standoff near the beginning.

Prospect is a slow burn, but one that presents its world, tempting you to question what is going on, rather than constantly expositing through a young character. At times this can be a bit frustrating, especially when dialogue is mumbled across a radio, but the film delivers a contained survival adventure over its 100 minute runtime that is reminiscent of a cross between The Revanant and Under Her Skin. Pascal & Thatcher are good, though there were a few bizarre directorial choices.
