Fighting against pirates in "old Hong Kong". Chinese costume drama with plenty of over-the-top tongue in cheek action and music. (imdb)

It's the late nineteenth century and the British rule Hong Kong. At least on land, because at sea a band of pirates, led by Lor Sam Pau, is lord and master. The coast guard does everything it can to catch the pirates, but always misses out. It's up to the unlikely combination of ex-Marine Dragon Ma, his former rival, Police Captain Tzu, and petty thief Fei to finally defeat the pirates.

This was a lot of fun. Starts off pretty wacky and the plot is kinda silly, but as it ramps up you can't help but love it. And putting a monocle on Jackie Chan is probably one of the best things to come out of the 80's. I gave it some extra points just because Fats was awesome at kung fu and...well...fat.

Sometimes I wish every action movie was paced and cut like this.

Every time the leads had a scene together, they just seemed to be saying, "I am popular for different reasons than you. We will fight together! No, wait, we will fight each other! No, we must join forces and fight a plot-mandated bad guy." (The shaved pate thing in HK movies bugs me. Can't those characters just be "not bald"?)

The story was kind of scattered and unfocused and consequently failed to take advantage of the comedic potential of the two featured actors, whose rapport, when it was allowed time, was excellent.

I'm sure Chan, Hung and Yuen vs pirates could have made for a better film. This one is 10% poorly directed kung fu and 90% tediously bad physical comedy. Chan even features open tributes to Buster Keaton, but Keaton he ain't.

Jackie Chan action adventure with a better constructed narrative than usual for him. Some good fights too, and some funny moments. He doesn't really do it for me in general, but this is on the top end of what I've seen from him.

Classic Jackie Chan movie with lots of jokes, great action scenes and a charming young Jackie. The bicycle scene is one of the great Jackie Chan scenes of all times. Fun, lots of fun!

So-so plot even for a Jackie Chan film, but some very creative stunts, wordplay, and teamwork.

Only worth watching if you like your movies to consist primarily of guys punching each other.

Jackie Chan's talent as a martial artist and physical comedian notwithstanding, I found myself mentally drifting off more than a couple of times due to a general lack of interest in the story and the characters.

Police Story was great and I don't think I'm gonna get a replica. This walks the fine line of "fun time" and mostly held nothing for me beyond the (admittedly excellent) stuntwork and maybe one or two gags early on. But to be fair, I was pretty tired and the "plot" beats are breakneck.

One of the finest Jackie Chan vehicles, "'A' gai wak" is very entertaining from start to finish. It's not only relentlessly action-packed, but the pitch-perfect fight choreographies and life-threatening stunts are downright insane and very memorable; the talent, creativity and badassery on display is off the charts, and the cherry on top is the laugh-out-loud humour. Sure, there are flaws in the film that keep it from being overall great, however what it sets out to do it does incredibly well.

Three dragons are in their prime in this movie that launched the whole post-Shaw Bros kung-fu movie wave. Story is only a bit more than just an excuse for crazy stunt and martial arts, but who watches kung-fu flick for story? Classic of the genre.

One of the better 80's films from Chan, helped largely because of his chemistry with Sammo and Biao.
