LGBT activists who raise money to help families affected by the UK miners' strike in 1984. The National Union of Mineworkers is reluctant to accept the group's support due to the union's public relations worries about being openly associated with a gay group, so the activists instead decide to take their donations directly to a small mining village in Wales -- resulting in an alliance, unlikely for the era but ultimately successful, between their respective communities. You could fault this for being manipulative, naive and whatever else but there's such a large, good heart in this film that none of it matters. Enjoyable ensemble cast, and a wonderful, touching true story of humanity and being good to others. Pride is a potent anti-cynicism pill. Watching this film will make you happy.

A potent true story - that of the complex relationship between the UK miners union and the LGBT activists who come to support them - that makes for a blisteringly entertaining film, sharply funny and so utterly good-hearted that only the most cynical will leave completely dry-eyed. The characters - many based on real people - make for an enthralling bunch, and the screenplay strikes an excellent balance between political conflict and personal relationship. One of the year's most enjoyable flicks

It's always weird to have such Hollywoodian writing for such important political topics as the unity of oppressed people and their common revolt. Damn was it cringe at times.

Killer cast, great feel good movie that made me feel like clapping at the end. I can't really find a fault with the whole film apart from the fact that the villain of the film is such a mustache twirling villain that it was distracting. but I don't think that it makes the film any worse. I think this is must watch for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ history

A movie where they use the importance of the message to try to make up for shortcomings in the storytelling department. There was nothing wrong with the performances or script, it was just a bit too bland and paint-by-numbers structurally, with a slow, drawn out timeline of events and not enough striking (oops) plot points. The characters were almost great, but possibly too numerous. As you can clearly see on the poster. Worthwhile subject matter but something of a Brit-hit clone job.

I struggled with the sheer cheerfulness and sickeningly sweet nature the film had. Some of it was welcome - there were some really sweet and lovely moments. But its exuberance permeated the whole thing, to the point where it was difficult to take any dramatic scenes seriously at all. Anyway, it's a nice story, and a decent look into British history. I just wish it wasn't viewed pretty much entirely through rose-tinted glasses.

a bunch of gay people help out a bunch of miners and the miners return the favour. that's nice. i suspect a lot of the awfulness of strikes and homophobia was hidden under the relentless barrage of joy. a few calls of pervert and faggot, and back on the a-train to mutual liberation. hey ho. plenty of rather amusing moments scattered throughout, but i don't think i'll ever be able to enjoy this sort of boundless optimism.

Unexpectedly great! A rag tag band of urban gays mobilizes to help the strike effort in a small rural town; it's more about the growing relationship between the two groups than the underlying politics. Managed to be consistently funny and enjoyable throughout while also tackling some heavy subjects (the AIDS crisis, homophobia & violence, coming out, etc) without ever trivializing them. Perhaps manipulative at times, but not cliche and always charming.

There's a lot to like in this film. It's a true story, feelgood film that's pro-union, and explores the intersection of workers and gay rights. Honestly it's really nice, a lot like Brassed Off, with just as much about friendship and community. Having sung it's praises, I'm still not giving it more than a 59. It's a very nice film, but it's not a very good one. Formulaic, and predictable. I do like the final message, that for all our differences we can spit on Thatcher's name as the common enemy

There is a thread of very British feel-good-based-on-a-true-story films like 'Brassed Off', 'Kinky Boots' and 'Made in Dagenham' (also feels very much like a precursor to 'It's A Sin'). This is firmly in this tradition, and its powerful. Not a dry eye in the house!

A lovely example of a "feel good" film. Even the briefest of scenes have this innate ability to widen the lips. Each of the characters (and there's a lot of them)are so exceptionally crafted that a definitive main character isn't at all apparent, they're just a close-knit group of individually rich characters and that's the basis for a wonderful film. Everything else from the music, to the humour, just places that figurative cherry on this figurative cake.

Probably, one of the best movies (also 2014's best) in the last decades. It is a masterpiece that should be watched by especially anyone who doesn't love the LGBT community and has prejudice against them. A fabulously rich movie with a superb mix of talent, especially Dominic West is fantastic, relating the victories of human relationships over and above the overwhelming power of political ideology in partnership with business. This really is a story that you need to know.Must-see, for humanity.

The good movies make it look so effortless. They pick you up and take you on a journey, step by step, and next thing you know it's an hour later, and you're CRAVING to know what happens next. This is one of those movies. Set in London in 1985, a group of gays realized that they had a fellow enemy of Thatcher, being the striking miners. Now most of the gays had been beaten up by miners, small town people, by bullies. But a few convinced the rest that this was a cause worth fighting for.

I knew nothing of the LGBT community's support of the National Union of Mineworkers during the Thatcher years, so this film was informative for me. It does slide into schmalz at times, but does enough meaningful work to engage and reward the viewer with an entertaining and ultimately uplifting story. Dominic West busting out in dance is a highlight.

A very nice movie that touches a lot of subjects but doesn't go to deep into them and is not too oversentimental, which was nice to see such touchy subject done in a more light tone. It has some funny moments and also emotional ones, it is an enjoyable movie

Sure it's predictable and unfocused, but it's heart is just so undeniable that things even out into an ok movie. The cast is immensely believable and the script (despite its faults) has some genuinely funny moments.

The first half hour is as scrappy as can be. Character introductions and development is poor, and the acting isn't very convincing. Things pick up in the second act and are a bit more believable, but there is never much of a sense of peril or things getting out of hand. It's all a bit too cosy considering the subject matter. The feel of the film is more akin to organising a street party. I'd have expected a touch more grittiness surrounding the subjects of miners' strikes and tackling homophobia

A great feel good film about an alliance between miners and a gay pride group. The acting was good and well cast. Everyone was likable and it makes you feel very good about the world and the people in it... I don't think it is a very deep movie or that memorable, but it's good for a smile and to make you feel better if you're down.

This is a great film from start to finish. Even if you aren't aware of the original subject matter its great to learn about the story and enjoy the ride. The performances are key in this and really carry the movie. This is all about the individual characters and how they come together as a group and each one of them deliver. The overal story was very interesting and takes you on an emotional journey, there are moments where you will laugh and cry. Highly recommend watching!

It pushes every button that you'd expect but this is irresistible for all that. Genuinely funny, charmingly played (Ben Schnetzer is man of the match) and it just about avoids tottering into cutesy-camp. Great stuff.

I came in expecting a guilty pleasure. If not something as serious as a "Dallas Buyers Club" or a "Milk", at least a feel-good or bittersweet political comedy like "The Full Monty" but which still respects the gravity of its subject matter. Unfortunately, "Pride" is a supremely contrived and syrupy movie for my palate, although Ben Schnetzer is admittedly very cute.

You can pretty easily track the tricks and methods this film uses to get you on its side. Very few "crowdpleasers" are truly effortless, this one included. But what heart and charm it has! It's just so good-natured and genuinely likeable, with a super fun cast and a really inspiring true story to draw from. I'm sounding like a newspaper pull-quote here but I couldn't find much to fault this film on.

This kind of movie is very predictable, by which I mean predictably good. A "crowd pleaser" if you will. I would not be surprised if the screenplay was written by enthusiastic student interns for the UK Labour Party. If you're at all left of center, you will find elements quite enjoyable, but even you will notice the exaggerations/dramatizations. If you're sympathies align with Margaret Thatcher's perspective, then this movie simply isn't for you.

In 1984, a group of gay rights activists decide to support striking miners of Britain, reasoning that Thatcher is their common enemy. Complications, some political, some rooted in human nature, ensue, but love and friendship ultimately prevail. Bright, vibrant historical entertainment, with a fine sense of the period and a witty script brought to life by a largely excellent ensemble. It does feel overstuffed, and some characters and story elements feel underdeveloped, but it warms the heart.
