Prick Up Your Ears

Pretty good, intelligent, with stellar leads, very modern-theatrical in style which is fitting for a film about playwrights. Also rather unrewarding in its many tangents, and not really ha-ha funny in its humor. The ending, while not unexpected if you know the outline, comes out of left field plot-wise. Some sort of an over-arching directionality or buildup could have given it more oomph.

Great central performances, but the structure of the flick is kind of a mess (much too episodic, the fault of most biopics). Vanessa Redgrave's delivery of the classic line, "It's a gesture dear, not a recipe" is unforgettable.

Good performances but kinda boring I must say.

Generally powerful and quite moving drama is hampered at times by a screenplay which becomes aimless and repetitive in its mid-section, but is ultimately redeemed by terrific performances by a great cast (Molina stands out, but Oldman and Redgrave are equally good). Framing device is occasionally clunky (and hints of Shawn's wife's jealousy are a strange irrelevancy) but the performances, and the overall atmosphere of a grimy 60s London, keep the film compelling.

leaving orton's and hallives' lives aside oldman and molina were breathtaking - they give soul to a very complex and sad relationship. a must see as far as I'm concerned.
