A hooker with a heart of gold. The entire premise of this movie screams 80's with it's obsession with money, power and the fairytale of easy upward mobility. It's also really creepy in it's attitude towards, well, everything. It does have some fun moments though and is well made for what it is.

I understand women need their adolescent fantasies brought 2 the screen as well. But can this gratingly predictable fairytale make some choices& stick 2 'em? 4get the hooker w/ a heart of gold: when is a whore not a whore? When she's a sweet, new-2-the-game (of course), non-bitter, freshly scrubbed JuliaRoberts. R the rich snobby jerks? Yes, they may also try 2 rape u, but we sooo desperately want 2 b part of their world, don't we? We want 2 believe "class" comes w/ an ability 2 appreciate opera

Well-made... just phony, and, whatever its "romance", utterly heartless. One of the many Julia Roberts movies in which she plays a shallow and conscienceless ditz that we're all supposed to love because she has perfectly white teeth and a flat tummy. Also one of the many Hollyweird films that promotes this sick "love is sex" idea, and probably the least realistic depiction of prostitution ever committed to film

As others have said, this film caters to the female fantasy of being so pretty and charming that you can land Prince Charming regardless of class. At the same time, it caters to the male fantasy of being so suave and being able to fuck a woman so good she'll never want to leave you, even if she's a hooker. Roberts does what she can, but at the end of the day, this is an R-rated Disney film, which isn't shocking considering the distributor. TL;DR GEORGE IS GETTING (SEXUALLY) FRUSTRATED!!

If someone looked like Roberts she wouldn't need to hook she'd be instantly scooped up by the hundreds of thousands of sexually deprived lonely well off men in America. The sympathy is contrived and also not believable. The hooker of a heart of gold is one of the oldest Hollywood archetypes around and you get to see it being played with a full orchestra here. Probably one of the most shallow popular films around with not an inkling of honesty.

I read an early draft of the script where neither Vivian nor Edward were perfect. I loved that script. The characters were so real. (http://www.awesomefilm.com/script/Pretty-Woman-($3,000).pdf) I found the movie to be so average after having read the exceptional script. Seems like the script has been battered for box office. The movie is still good but knowing what it could have been, it is hard to appreciate it.

$3000 for the week is now $3300, thanks to inflation. For a film about sex work, this film is pretty much absent of anything sexual. I have also been doing my best Roy Orbison impression, saying "Pretty Woman", the only words I know in the song, around the house.

This Pretty Woman is pretty entertaining. This was my first time seeing this film. I've seen clips or maybe some random parts when it was on tv but this was my first time watching it from start to finish. Julia Roberts shows why she became one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. She's very adorkable and charming. Richard Gere is kind of a jerk but just that kind of handsome guy all women want to fix up...

The quintessential chick-flick - chockablock with clichés, from "hooker with a heart of gold" to "Cinderalla rip-off." The original script was a dark tale of lost love and human nature (Julia Roberts character was meant to be a drug-addict whose dream is to go to Disney Land and make a new life in California; Richard Gere doesn't take her away as his princess but does give her a one-way ticket to the House of Mouse, CA.). Your mileage, as they say, may vary.

Mistakes - 1) When Vivian is watching I Love Lucy, she goes over to Edward and undoes his tie, and then goes to get a pillow or something, in the next shot of him his tie is done again, then goes back to being undone. 2) Tire tracks from the camera vehicle can be seen in the grass in the brief shot of polo players moving toward the camera. 3) When Edward and Vivian kiss for the first time, her white nightgown goes from being long to being short.

Who is gunna say no to Pretty Woman? It's probably stood the test of time better than almost any other mainstream movie. I've seen it hundreds of times and it's still a wonderful romantic comedy, and proof that, when done well, they can be as fulfilling as any other genre. Julia Roberts is pure charisma and radiant joy in this movie, it's no wonder she's been around for so long. Just perfect.

This movie garners interesting reactions. People do not believe that a whore and a billionaire could genuinely fall for each other; which yes, seems non-sensical in this context but "poor to rich" stories like this have been a literary trope for centuries and I don't believe this deserves scrutiny for that more than those in the past. In its own right? It's shallow but the chemistry between the two leads is charismatic and fun, even if this is hinging on a puerile fantasy.

But honestly as a story set in real life, who the fuck could believe it. a prozzie that attractive is a no, a rich man falling in love with a prostitute is another no, spending all that cash is another no. a sixty year old man looking like that and this 20 year old loving him is another no. only believable bit is she gets dumped by bf and she turns into a whore as revenge then the real story is she gets on drugs and gets aids or something

It's not surprising that this film shows up a lot in academic media studies literature. There's so much to say about individualism, consumerism, commercialisation, male gaze, objectification, etc. More than that it's such a beautifully made movie, and there's real chemistry between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. A perfect time capsule that we'll use to study late 20th century culture for years to come. The ending was both clichéd and deserved in equal measure. Shit made me cry happy tears.

What’s really funny is how the original script ($3000) was a referendum on the evils of capitalism & the broken American dream, while the final script is a rags to riches Disney faerie tale about the value of nepotism & how happiness is always just a sociopathic sugar daddy away. Was this produced by Weinstein? I wish someone would make the OG script, which is probably how the writers felt by the time it was being shot: chasing the limo swearing & picking up their gutter cash, heaving sobs.

Featuring some very enjoyable performances by Roberts & Gere, who both shine in their roles here, it also has a pretty strong soundtrack & its share of memorable moments. The plot makes sense for the most part & is fine for what it is, expected cheese & all, & while there's really nothing new about any of it and some things feels a bit heavy handed, it's still entertaining. That combined with sharp dialogue, intriguing characters & solid writing make for a fun ride that's worth a watch.

While the premise is problematic at best, PRETTY WOMAN endures on the strength of the chemistry between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, as well as the instant appeal of its geographic and sartorial iconography. And despite the offhand way it treats some of its more salacious (and potentially depressing) details, this is a film with an old soul, fitting neatly into the Hollywood legacy of class-conflict romantic comedies with preposterous yet satisfying endings.

Julia Roberts as a woman who is as smart as she is attractive, which makes her very smart. Like many prostitutes, she is able to perform the mental trick of standing outside of what she does, of detaching herself and believing that her real self is not involved. That's what she does. The film at face value is bad enough, the subtext is grotesque. Prostitution is sidestepped by making her a special princess we never see in action besides the main plot, the transactional relationship is eased into by having him not be "that guy" who would pay for sex. Remove the escort angle and it's about a woman finding true love & happiness in billions of dollars. There's no chemistry between them, and the angst/sleaze is externalized to JA. Watch the It's Always Sunny spoof for some truth.

This may be one of the films that tells you most about Hollywood most nakedly. The process of prostituion is like washing your hands - this is of real utility in Hollywood because sooner or later in that business nearly everyone must consent to being screwed for money. Gere is perfect - hardly there, without odor or disease. And Julia Roberts is about as enchanting and magical and cloud-cuckoo-land as anyone has ever been in American film.

Time has not really been kind to one of the biggest hits of the early 90s, but an undeniably charismatic performance from Roberts (in the launching pad for her career) and agreeably sincere performances from Gere, and especially Elizondo, help smooth over the film's shortcomings, as in Marshall's sitcom-like direction, and a screenplay which uncomfortably straddles light comedy with more seamy aspects of the story (if it had completely committed to either side, it may have been a better film).
