Psychoanalysis will solve all the world's problems, at least with Poitier at the helm, a man of infinite patience as an oddly-cast Darin spews hatred against Jews and Blacks. There are some creative moments where some memories are re-created right in that tiny office, but the film suffers from being a flashback (and having its own flashbacks) which force it to end on a tone-deaf note. I can see some viewers confusing this with Nazi propaganda since that side gets most of the air time.

Both Poitier and Darin are good in what's virtually a two man film. The issue is that this film is very consumed with it's period's obsession with psychoanalysis, so much so that this feels like a story about two archetypes, not real people. Despite having quite a few inventive visual ideas, it's ultimately a not very interesting examination of some interesting questions, chiefly a doctor's ethical obligations when dealing with morally repugnant patients.

Great movie and if you watch this you can see the how in many way the The Nazi were like some of the left are in the world today. Spreading hate and making up lies about who they hate.

Uneven but still compelling.

tries to tackle racism in a time where it's an untouchable subject in film by linking it to a sociopath nazi, kramer makes a less guarded attempt at taking on civil rights in '67, but it ends up being too late. regardless of social commentary this stands up pretty well after fifty years.

Curious, quite compelling case history, told in pointless and confusing flashback; sharply made and photographed, melodramatically acted.

Darin gives an excellent performance as the Nazi patient in this intelligent drama based on a true case.
