Premature

Charting of a coming-of-age love affair is no groundbreaker in terms of form or content, checking all of the expected boxes of the genre, however it is distinguished by Howard and Boone's empathetic, charismatic performances, combined with Green (and Howard behind the camera) bringing a vivid, fresh and gritty passion to the depiction of the relationship. Setting this firmly and specifically in the Bronx gives a further feeling to this story and relationship being fully formed and lived in.

I have a bad relationship with movies named "Premature". See my ratings from 2014. The scene with Isaiah insisting on walking on the outside with Ayanna reminded me of my Dad giving me the same advice. Realizing movie time constraints, the romance feels quick. Also, I realize the actress isn't, but isn't Ayanna 17? Feels weird to get elongated musical sex scenes featuring a 17-year-old. That said, the leads and the setting are believable, if a little tropey. This is made with care and intent.
