Reygadas seems to be overtly channeling Zerkalo here (he's always worn his Tarkovsky pretty openly on his sleeve), and like that film there are some stunning moments (namely the opening sequence, easily the highlight of the entire film) intermingled haphazardly with boring bits and some utterly misguided pretentious nonsense. It's sort of like all the flaws of Tree of Life magnified tenfold and with less of a singular sensibility to justify them.

"Carlos Reygadas's latest, an almost impossibly intellectual film, keeps us at a remove that's as striking as that which separates its main character from the lower classes." - Ed Gonzalez

Disjointed, fascinating, dull, impressive and bonkers.

Apparently this is a work of semi-autobiography for director Carlos Reygadas (who won Best Director at Cannes), which might explain its obscurity to the uninitiated, but not its crushingly slow pace or excessively fragmentary narrative. There are some fine scenes (the demon, the self-decapitation, the orgy), the acting is solid, and Reygadas is clearly skilled, but I was honestly bored stiff most of the time. It has its adherents, and I can understand why one would admire it--but I did not.

A movie that really wants you to write a lot about it so I'm not going to, sorry.

The finish line to my Reygadas marathon, a story told in panoramic vision touching on class consciousness, animal impulse, the nature of cruelty. I didn't find this to be as opaque or impenetrable as some people seem to, the story is rather simple, but CR oscillates between showing fallout and motive at his own spiritual discretion.

BlurayRip RARBG

something missing in this dreamlike narrative, but what is it? nonetheless, reygadas tries to explore new ways of telling a story unlike many others in the industry.

29 Agustos 2018 & It could be the most powerful film of Reygadas. A large part of his power is taking the uncertainty of the next sequence. Absolutely unpredictable, intriguing and fresh! [I don't understand anything and don't give a shit]

Top badass moment? Well… some of the scenery was nice. So what a load of pretentious, self-indulgent bollocks that was. Watching it is like sitting in a pub half listening to a dozen, unconnected conversations going on around you. Slower than a growing cactus, it literally forced me to fall asleep for part of it, after just two pints. In Tenebris by Thomas Hardy is much better and almost spelt the same. 1 (very long tailed) cat, 1 (very large) chainsaw and 1 (very interesting) decapitation.

(Viewed in 2013): Post Tenebras Lux is Reygada's best film, but it's a discombobulated affair that only works in fits and starts. It's rarely more than a series of intermittently effective moments because he never establishes an internal rhythm for its disconnected narrative. The opening scene with his daughter is incredible, capturing the beauty and danger of the natural world, from innocence to experience, but it's the sole highlight that prefigures its downward trajectory.

My first Reygadas film, so I'm not sure how well my observations transfer to his other movies, but my immediate feeling after finishing POST TENEBRAS LUX was that of frustration; frustration because Reygadas' talent as a filmmaker is obvious, yet it's equally obvious his broken-logic approach doesn't quite take you to that "other" place he strives for. Several hypnotizing moments, and the depiction of the divide between classes is well done, but like Tarkovsky, the lingering is often tedious.

Certainly one of the most visceral experiences I've had with a film, its dreamlike (or nightmarish, depending on the scene) atmosphere emphasized by the usage of the long take, fragmented editing, a densely constructed soundscape, and a lens whose frayed edges create ghostly imprints of images on the edge of the frame. You don't attempt to think about what you see; you simply take it in as one of the more memorable films in contemporary experimental cinema.

Despite being visually gorgeous, the extremely slow pace does not make up for it. It was hard to watch even at two times the speed. The movie is just a pretentious mess and everything just feels so random. I feel like it'd be better if he just directed music videos or something.

I was a big fan of Reygadas's last film, so it pains me to rate this so low. Not that it was appalling, it was just too obliquely impenetrable. Artistically made but almost impossible to suffer through, when there's no compelling reason to move from one scene to the next. I'd have watched that 1st scene for 2 hours though.

Upping the score to 95 just because 3 years later this still lingers in the mind. Need to rewatch, might be a 100.

The first Reygadas film I've seen, and I'm sure as shit gonna check out his others. Right from the beginning, I was taken away by this film and it's brilliantly natural (and sometimes distorted) cinematography. The story is slow to unravel and the characters' actions are often questionable, but it seems to fit in this rather detached and rather scathing look at opposing social classes. Also contains enough freaky surrealist moments to keep the kids entertained.

In typical Reygadas fashion, this film is beautiful to look at. The slightly opaque-around-the-edges camera evokes a sense of memory, while the non-chronological approach allows the opportunity to see the relationship from a distance. That said, the harshness of some of the imagery completely overwhelms the film--the promise of the title doesn't come to fruition despite the aftermath of the Neil Young scene. This may be Reygadas' point, but if so, it's a much less interesting film as a result.

Some awesome scenes, some head-scratchers, and some that are both awesome and head-scratching. After watching a Reygadas film, it becomes apparent how little other filmmakers are even trying in comparison.

Deliberate art-house melodrama musing on family disintegration and biblical themes with no apparent logical organization, wildly uneven and alienating but with choice moments. Seemingly autobiographic.
