Crawford and Gable both contribute in elevating what's on the surface a pretty standard story of love troubles.

Joan Crawford portrayed the small town girl turning big city society girl real well. She even out-shined the great Clark Gable here. But of course it wouldn't have worked so well without the rock that's Gable to lean on and play off. A deeply honest love story about a powerful man who's afraid of getting married again after being hurt before and a lady that wants to be there for him. A strong story, but a rather weak and simple finish. They could have made that part a lot more dramatic and real.
