The remake you never knew you never wanted. They occasionally use the shiny new 3D animation to good effect, and Mewtwo is once again the most interesting character, but the writing is uninspired, the pacing sucks, and there's a LOT of padding. Even the battles in the third act quickly become boring - and boy howdy, they go on for a while.

The animation is truly hideous, that aside this was a perfectly serviceable remake of one of my favorite Pokémon movies.

Never been a Pokemon fan. The original animation never fascinated me, so I was interested in seeing a refurbished modern rework would be more my thing. Sort of was, but they phoned it in too much with the stiffness of the animation this time around, making it look all kinds of cheap. There are aspects of the animation which are good, so had there been more focus on the artistic nature of the visuals than cutting budget corners, this could have been a real treat. As it stands, not so much.

Two decades after the original was released, in a market dominated by nostalgia, this Pokémon remake shouldn't be surprise. Despite a few subtle changes, this "evolution" doesn't really live up to its name. The CG is the major update, and it's not better. To be fair, neither is it worse. The elemental textures do look good, and the rubbery character designs are fine once you get used to them. Sadly the whole thing lacks charm, and didn't gain any complexity in return.
