Lee Changdong seems a lot like a fledgling poet himself. He knows the basics and likes to show it, selecting off-the-path topics, wringing every drop of emotion from every mundane situation, filling his movie to the brim with metaphors and rhymes. He doesn't have what, to me, are the hallmarks of artistic maturity: balance, focus, and sufficient restraint. Some parts of "Poetry" are of value, but as a whole it's all over the place, and more is not always better.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if you only see one Korean film in your life, you could make it this one.

[..] but I did relish the wistful suggestion that Mija had had such a rich life (which, somehow, adds gravity to the girl's early departure).

"Poetry" is one of the gentlest movies of the year, yet one of the most devastating. Jeong-hie Yun gives one of the best performances of the year, it's simply heartbreaking. Her monologue alone in the scene where she confesses her fondest memory in her poetry class should earn her an Oscar nomination, but sadly, AMPAS voters, for some reason, don't respond well to foreign language performances.

Touching story of a lady getting old, trying to learn poetry and meaning in her lonely life.

Presents a forward-facing story that is beautiful and delicate while a dark under-current persists below the surface that makes you question how said beauty can be truly seen and appreciated after we've been forced to confront the sickening realities of the world that are covered up so nonchalantly. There is a great deal to chew on in Poetry, and I know it's a film that will linger in my mind and expand the same way Lee Chang-dong's other films have.

Didn't buy in until the final 10 minutes, which floored me and salvaged the unfocused and at times unnatural plotting. The lead performance is remarkable for its entire runtime. Recommended if you're into misery-porn. Reminded me of Breaking the Waves-era Lars Von Trier in that respect.

It's not difficult to write a poem, but to have a heart to write one. To write poetry you must see well. The most important thing in life is seeing. To see.

A film that excels in subtlety. Beautiful stuff but never hits you over the head with cathartic scenes or striking shots. The restraint makes you work for the payoff.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

I have a hard time forming an opinion on this movie. The main character is impenetrable to me, but crucially, she always felt completely real. There are no easy answers given in this movie, everything is nuanced and morally grey. The teenage boy is a massive, believable prick for most of the movie but just as I was comfortable in my dislike of him, the movie rips that certainty away from beneath my feet. Like good poetry, I think this needs to be re-examined to truely grasp.

Beautiful in every sense of the word. After recently seeing Secret Sunshine, this certainly did not disappoint and is actually the better film of the two.

A beautifully shot and rendered film, Poetry encapsulates empathy for the other, the joy and the pain involved in truly seeing, and the continued--and maybe even increased--necessity for poetry in the modern world. Yun Jeong-hee's performance is touching, nuanced, inspiring, and devastating. The film slowly builds to a narrative and emotional crescendo that prompts reflection long after the film ends.

Fantastic watching Jeong-hee Yoon as the lead pondering her rapidly deteriorating existence with subtlety, dignity, and such yearning for meaning. It's always welcome to see a dramatic plot without over-theatrics.

Jeong-hie Yun gives a beautiful performance as an older woman dealing with the onset of Alzheimer's and the situation her daughter's son has brought upon himself and her.The poetry classes and when the film focus's on her exclusively was the highlights of the film for me.The parts that deal with the boy or his problems were not as good.I really wished those parts was left out and the film focused more on the woman.

A moving and exceptionally well-paced film with outstanding acting. The poetry in this film is the level of detail in the inspection of Mija's life and actions. It reminded me of a cross between "Mother" and "Spring, Summer..." Yet again Korean cinema explores new heights, putting the rest of the world to shame.

Some things work. Some don't. It can be frustratingly inconsistent and hard to relate to but I did love that haunting final scene.

Poetry isn't quite in the class of Kurosawa's Stray Dog, but Lee's domestic-social drama certainly evinces some of Kurosawa's... well, poetry.

Slow-moving, and the poetry motif didn't click with me. Although the themes are different, I couldn't help comparing it to Mother and wishing I was watching that instead.
