Play is an astute and humorous observation, based on real cases of bullying, that deliberately plays with preconceptions, and our expectations that it's all going to end badly. (mubi.com)

In every sense, this film blew me away. From the thoroughly considered cinematography, that makes Tati look like an amateur, to the performances of the kids that make ... 'Kids' look like pseudo-realism. It's so unpleasant and so damned easy to relate to when these kids harass each other. Maybe there's a certain nordic feel about it that I can relate to. But the problems that come with mankind being a social animal, in a culturally divided 21st century, are well-characterized here. Impressive.

I think that's the opposite of the pretentious politically correct bullshit movies about immigrants and minorities in Europe. Öslund destroys the myth about the harrassed and discriminated minorities by showing the absence of the "state" which is the sole responsible for this situation and with the help of long and static shots he forces the audience to "see" that absurdity with their own eyes, unlike the indifferent bystanders at the public space of Sweden. Love it.

Succeeds in what it set out to do, i.e. toying with our misguided predispositions, passed on to us through our upbringing and years of shallow entertainment. What I also enjoyed were the natural performances from the young leads, as well as the delightfully fitting side story involving a misplaced cradle which really validated the film's message. The static cinematography suits the film perfectly, as if unwilling to act yet unwilling to look away.

Thoroughly plays with our expectations and tropes. Naturalistic acting works very well for the subject matter. Enjoyed the subtle examination of race and class (and the interaction between the two) in bullying.

Incredible observation&presentation of Swedish people on political correctness and indifference to public spaces(only in certain situations*). Great satire about Western communities. All the kid actors did an excellent job.

This movie puts the audience through the emotional wringer. Where Östlund's other films often find the dark comedy in uncomfortable situations, Play is going straight for the horror. His signature filmmaking style turns the viewer into just one more of the silent bystanders who can't look away but don't dare to interfere.

Long shots, offscreen action and cutting people's heads off don't automatically make art, I'm afraid. The acting was decent, but man did it drag at times. Happy to see that he turned to somewhat more conventional movies after this.

One has to be in the right mood to watch this film - the long takes are fascinating, the cinematography is intriguing and sometimes beautiful, the acting is surprisingly great and the story is somewhere between nerve-wracking, bizarre and absurdly hilarious. But Ostlund likes to sit on his shots for a long time and, let's face it, sometimes that is just kind of boring. But he forces the audience to question their beliefs about race, class, innocence, crime. A very good movie.

By far his most accessible film so far. I think Involuntary is probably a bit better, but this was just a very gripping watch. Great performances from the kids.

Director Ruben Östlund has a sharp eye for both realism and satire, and his camera's always as objective as possible, treating all players ("good" kids, "bad" kids, bystanders, props) equally. A very entertaining watch.
