In a small Spanish town, a group of old ladies decide to celebrate Christmas Eve with a "Sit a poor man at your table" dinner: each wealthy household of the town will have a homeless person dining with them. The celebrations also include a parade, and in it we find Plácido, the humble owner of a three-wheeler, whose family is forced to live in a public lavatory because of the lack of money to pay the rent, and who has to pay the second bill of his vehicle before midnight or else he will lose it.

A really good dark comedy about people who talk a big game about thinking of others and yet seem to think the world should revolve around them. It becomes just a little bit tiresome towards the end but otherwise it's very enjoyable in its biting criticism.

I liked this a lot, but I thought it was a rare movie where the subtitles hurt it considerably for me. The actual quality of the movie is almost certainly better than this, but the dialogue is so fast and relentless that I was unable to look away from the subtitles and look at what was happening on screen as much as I would have liked, and I felt like this was a lot I missed due to this. Great, great topic though that is as timely now as ever. Definitely recommended.

Not sure whether to call this proto-Altman or if Altman should be called post-Berlanga.

Calling this a mere satire of class relations makes it sound like some of Bunuel's superficially similar, but far cruder surrealist farces a-la "The Exterminating Angel". Azcona's script has the warmer, more heartfelt, and far more sophisticated feel of top-grade neorealism. The ironically named protagonist, Placido, struggles to get a word in edgewise as he drifts through Berlanga's busy, crowded, meticulous set-pieces. Probably needs at least a second viewing to fully appreciate.

In this lively Bunuel-esque farce about hypocrisy, Berlanga mostly takes aim at the bourgeois, but doesn't really let anyone off the hook, including Placido. Just as good as El Verdugo, and even slightly funnier, the only real shortcoming is that the film's pace and temperament is so manic you start to wish for a few pauses in the action. Still, it's a terrific satire with heaps of amusing characters and situations, a sharp critique of fascist Spain.
