As the plot mixes sci-fi horror & Wild West tropes, I thought I was going to see John Carpenter's Alien. But it's full of silly dialogue, bad gender politics, and visuals from bad 90's music videos. Most of all it can't present concepts well: especially information and suspense. And while he's a likable enough dude, Vin Diesel can't play a Snake Pilsen-style anti-hero who chews the scenery. Overall it's boring; with no fun scares or action. Tell your nerdy teenage nephew to avoid this one.

Remake of LOST IN SPACE (note the inclusion of a Dr Smith-type character and a kid), by way of ALIEN. Yet another waste of the talents of Keith David. Nothing good to report here. At all.

Great futuristic sci-fi/horror/action flick. Vin Diesel plays the very memorable anti-hero Riddick. A decent plot, complete with the cool character of Riddick, as well as some stylish visuals make this a very solid watch.

This was "Flight of the Pheonix" with wooden monsters ... and then they threw in some cgi aliens (boom boom!). You know this is going to be shitty film when Rahda Mitchell crawls into a hole, and the camera spends 10 mins focusing on her cleavage and shots of her rear end. The problem with PB is that it is trying to be so "cool", so "trendy" that it completely fails to make any dialogue actually comprehensible. This is not a flaw, of course, because a 3yr old could have written the script

Riddick was certainly the most entertaining part of this movie, it's just too bad the film spends most of the 2-hour running time doing absolutely nothing. If you want me to care about your secondary characters at least build them past their two-word profiles ("tough woman", "religious man", "spunky kid") before killing them off (it's obvious from the first ten minutes so don't complain about spoilers)!

It's a generic but good enough premise: innocent people must rely on a criminal with night-vision to survive on a planet with hungry aliens and no light. But the payoff never lives up to the promise and the annoying film stylings of early 2000s (bleached film, slow camera) bring this down further.

Aggressively average ALIEN knock-off starts promisingly, with some effectively harsh, sun-bleached cinematography creating a seemingly perfect environment for Diesel's menacing villain, but then the film turns into a more typical and predictable "shooting gallery" horror film, with some questionably realised CGI aliens thrown into the mix. Ultimately dull and unmemorable.

Actually really enjoyable classic sci-fi horror. I liked the characters and the fact that they all had their unique moments and personalities. I really loved Fry and Riddick and the film has some great one-liners. Overall a well executed above average low budget sci-fi film. It takes a lot of obvious inspiration from the superior Alien (1979), but it all feels well constructed enough to feel like its own thing and its own interesting world. Solid!

Best action movies are small and are based around single idea and a few bad men. Pitch Black excels in making it's limited budget a strength and it's desolate universe and filming locations seemingly logical choices. It's also over the top and frankly ridiculous at times, but also extremely entertaining.

Secretly kind of a sci-fi classic. Pitch Black doesn't take itself too seriously, and yet slick direction, solid performances and interesting indie stylings elevate the entertainment well above its meagre budget. The audio-visual effects were stunning (and innovative) at the time, and if you let them, they still evoke a sense of fearful wonder, some two decades later. Twohy and cast have fun ramping up the tension, and when the action kicks in, it never really stops until the final frame.

An interesting dark sci-fi concept, with a tailor-made role for Vin Diesel as Riddick. The outset is a bit rushed but throughout the movie, the characters are revealed to be more interesting than the plot which, honestly, weighs a bit thin after a while. It is remarkably well-made and beautifully shot for a B-movie though. I was especially impressed by the use of light and color in to convey overall situation-feel and emotion. Either way, David Twohy definitely has my attention from now on.

A guy with built-in night-vision gets stranded on an abandoned planet on the one day in a 22-year cycle when a solar eclipse is due to take place. Lucky coincidence, eh? Plot contrivances aside (of which there are quite a few), this isn't so bad. The characters are a little more developed than in most action-adventure fare, although they do end up resorting to some truly illogical decisions. It's watchable, but quite silly.

Pitch Black is a pretty enjoyable film once it gets going. It does take a while to kick into high gear, but after a slow start, it delivers the thrills you want from this type of film. It has a good enough cast to follow for a while, even if some of the characters act stupidly for the sole purpose of getting killed off. But because the aliens can appear from anywhere and Riddick always feels like he could turn on the supposed "good guys," the film keeps tension high and is quite a bit of fun.

The morally questionable characters made this more interesting that your typical sci-fi action film. This is a good-looking movie too, with nice cinematography, costumes, set design, and effects. After about 30 minutes, though, you find that you're watching something agonizingly predictable, something that goes on to taunt you with possibilities because it has nothing else interesting to present: the aliens aren't scary, the plot is bare bones, and the character development is half-hearted.

It's sure an interesting one. The idea seems quite fresh and shows good potential, but there is just way too much padding out of the material turning a fast-paced action film in an inhospitable environment into more of a lethargic trudge round the garden. Very early 2000s in style (and lack of substance thereof). It's quite horribly edited, and the pacing's wonky at best. The characters are one-dimensional, and Riddick especially is the most boringly written character they could come up with. The color grading, camera effects, and lighting were all... interesting, to say the least. Even then, there's some charm to it all; some shots are actually pretty good, and I can appreciate the schlockiness.

Some stylish design and Diesel's cool character are not quite enough to redeem this EXTREMELY 2000 actioner with mediocre creatures and a run of the mill plot. Top badass moment? The staring competition between VD (childish snigger) and an alien. I mean, seriously? Playing himself as usual, VD, a man not satisfied with just being named after a petrochemical that's a major contributor to Climate Change and responsible for thousands of pollution-related deaths each year, inadvertently contaminates an entire alien world with testosterone and smugness, which really annoys the locals. A row ensues. And it rains. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Pitch Black is a half decent Sci/Fi that would of been completely forgettable if it wasn't for it's lead character, 'Riddick' played by Vin Diesel. His anti-hero reminded me of Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken from 'Escape from New York'. The concept is simplistic and the special effects are poor and haven't aged particularly well. But the overall tone works perfectly and amplifies the coolness of the 'Riddick' character. Back in 2000 this was a fun watch and the franchise had a lot of potential.

It's a low budget Sci-fi horror film, that's not exactly a big draw for me and for the first 10 minutes or so it was all I could notice. But slowly it begins to really build the atmosphere with a palpable sense of heat, dread and desperation. Narratively it relies a bit too much on well worn tropes, but the atmosphere is so effective that it largely didn't bother me and there are some great little moments that make it not feel entirely by-the numbers.

One of the laziest attempts at sci-fi I've seen. The writing is apathetic and the movie is basically just a thin vehicle for Vin Diesel to be a macho killing machine who slings moronic one-liners while also finding time to put women in their place. The moment when the brave kid being a boy is revealed to be just an illusion, we are shown that she had been a sniveling, cowardly girl all along. As we all know, women are weak, pathetic creatures who are destined to succumb to their fake altruism.

Decent little sci-fi flick whose reputation far excedes the actual goods it delivers. The camera tricks and colour filters are largely annoying, but it's got a great concept and strong characters and sometimes that's all you need to get by. The movie seems pretty firmly on its tracks by the time the second act rolls around, and doesn't offer much by way of surprises, but it's fun enough and for once Vin Diesel is great. It made me long for a simpler time, when Radha Mitchell was in everything.

An interesting concept, awkwardly carried out. Of course the main focus is on Vin Diesel's Riddick character, and it generally isn't a good sign when he is expected to carry the show. There was a particular twist near the end of the movie which I thought was painfully obvious the entire time.
