Pirosmani

Created in a naïve style uniquely its own and highly apposite to its subject. Biopics always seem to suffer the problem of not having figured out how it could be at all possible to convey the span of a lifetime in two or three hours, but here, less than 90 minutes seem sufficient not only to cover the events, but to convey the passage of time in a way that suggests something both about the role of the artist and more generally about the tragic character of all human existence. Looks terrific.

Pirosmani's paintings made alive. Gorgeous homage.

feels like the same sort of arc as 'man who planted trees', but more schizoid than mourning. like a mother who loves his earth-children, but is also bitterly disappointed in it.
