The message of the film reverses Disney's emphasis on conformity. Set in pre-WWII fascist Italy, this version emphasizes non-conformity. Ultimately, it's not that Pinocchio needs to learn to behave like Carlo, but Geppetto needs to learn to love Pinocchio for who her is. The fascist elements of the plot are a little heavy handed and lead to the only section of the film that drags, but they aren't bad. It's a really delightful film.

Beautifully written and directed. The world of stop-motion animation continues to astound me. The production here is fantastic, from the character designs to the music (all of which was great by the way). Toro never misses. He had the unique vision and retelling this character needed, and it’ll work as a stellar farewell to this character assuming we never see another damn Pinocchio movie AGAIN. It’s a dark, graphic, touching retelling. I loved the characters and the ending a lot. Don’t miss it!

So... Pinocchio is an insufferable brat with an irritating voice who can’t even die; the story is boring, overlong and empty, with no memorable set pieces and a WWII background that adds nothing; moral messages are all over the place; the handful of musical numbers are amongst the worst I’ve ever heard; and even the much-lauded stop-motion just looks like shoddy CGI most of the time. I’ve seen worse, but can’t think of a single redeeming feature in this ironically soulless production.

Is it a sign of the times that our fairy tales are permeated with fascism? (Well, if the shoe fits...) del Toro's genius is in reimagining a parable about unquestioning obedience as a journey of moral independence.

Del Toro is a manchild with a limited artistic vision, tacky taste, and who in my opinion needs to grow up and move on from always being involved in childish fairy tale projects. His signature prepubescent focus is not cute or imaginative or nostalgic- it’s pretty creepy actually.

Del Toro back in his whimsical comfort zone of children's fairytales juxtaposed with the horrors of fascism. A beautifully crafted, heartfelt and surprisingly witty retelling of a known story, that doesn't shy away from the darker themes.

Visually, it's a marvel. Putting the already dark enough Pinocchio story mid-WWII is... Well, it's the guy who made Pan's Labyrinth so maybe I shouldn't call it "inspired", but it really works. So the dialogue and the moral is a bit clichéd. But you get Cate Blanchett playing a monkey, what else ya want?

The stop motion in del Toro's version of the classic children's tale is stunning. Puns aside, there is real life in the titular character that one half design and one half brilliant voice acting. The story is dark and might get a bit weighty, but this update is well worth a watch.

With the growing number of recent Pinocchio adaptations, I'm realising the limitations of the source plot & characters. Nevertheless, del Toro (et. co) does an admirable job of breathing new life into the old tale with a more contemporary setting, a tragic backstory (is it even a Guillermo film without a child dying), and luscious stop-motion animation. None of the voice performances were wooden, but Mann's voice was a touch too squeaky. Felt a little long with the songs, but still enjoyable.

An actual visual masterpiece - easily one of the best-looking stop-motion movies there has ever ever been - and does a fantastic job of blending a fun family movie with Del Toro’s usual style and anti-establishment thematic focus. Brilliant cast and wonderful score which compliment the amazing designs and cinematography perfectly. Could have done without the songs and there’s some rough dialogue but mostly a really incredible achievement and one to show any future kids.

There's a complexity and poignancy allotted to Pinocchio and Geppetto that I haven't seen explored in previous incarnations of this story and I found myself unexpectedly moved for almost the entirety of this section of the first half. Inevitably, I think this isn't quite as strong when it brings in its dual antagonists (the circus master Count Volpe and fascist war officer Podestà) as neither character nor the situation they offer is as satisfyingly rich as the Geppetto/Pinocchio relationship.

This was really good. It definitely goes darker than the Disney movie, but it does it in all the right ways, while still feeling appropriate as a kid's movie, but one that adults might be able to relate to more, and maybe even shed a tear here or there. It is beautifully animated as well, and the few songs in here aren't bad either. One of Netflix's better movies for sure.

A stop-motion animated movie with wood working should be cozier than this. Shortly after Pinocchio comes to life, bad things just happen to him without following a bad choice. Maybe that's not the point here, but what is? Life is short and cruel, so accept it? Also, the villains are pixar-esque caricatures, and the songs are blah except 'Everything Is New To Me' and over-pad the runtime. I enjoyed the first half a lot. Once it was all over I was left sad and dissatisfied.

The script felt off to me. Most of the event seem to happen by random chance instead of being a consequence of character grows. Sometimes it's even nonsensicel (spoilers: how did Pinocchi knew Geppetto was drowning and how did he die if he managed to bring him out of the water?)

The premise and intrigue behind this movie is enticing but the first half is tough to get into and fall in love with. During the second half the story started to take a bit more shape and it greatly improved. Pinocchio himself was very annoying, especially in the first few scenes, however I feel this improves later on.

Very similar to Pan's Labyrinth in context and story themes. A good movie with some amazing animation scenes. A darker side of the popular story. I like the original story's focus on being good better than this yet another exploration of fascism by del Toro. Here the original theme is quite shallow.

This must be how audiences felt when they first released Nightmare Before Christmas! The amount of love within this story is only matched by the love spent by those making it. Beautiful in every way, touching and mesmerizing. Sometimes too sappy and a few too many jokes interrupt touching moments, but there is no denying, this is a modern masterpiece of stop motion animation!

Not merely a "dark" reworking of Pinocchio, but a richly designed, emotionally and thematically complex version, which cleverly weaves the devastation of World War I (and the seductive pull of fascism) organically into the tale, raising the emotional stakes for both Geppetto and Pinocchio (both characters given short shrift in previous incarnations). Voice cast is terrific, highlighted by Waltz and Blanchett, but it's a special treat to see Bradley given a front and centre opportunity to shine.

Despite its minor flaws, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a beautifully tragic and emotionally effective film that is worth the wait. It's a dark reimagining of the fairy tale that explores themes of control, mortality, and what it means to be human, all while staying true to del Toro's signature style. It's a one-of-a-kind feature that deserves recognition come awards season.

Gorgeous animation and a story that doesn't pull its emotional punches. I would have loved it more but Pinocchio is such an unbearable brat most of the film that I would have doused him in gasoline and took him to a firework show. As a cynical introvert, I can't handle that amount of untamed childish energy. Pinocchio wasn't endearing to me. He was an overzealous hellion begging for an infanticide.

Del Toro’s storytelling sensibilities just don't gell with me. His humor is not funny, his pacing feels off and the emotional beats feel tacky. Which is a terrible shame as his visuals are one of a kind. There is no one more capable of creating wistfully strange and delightfully creepy designs. I just wish they came with a story I could actually get attached to. This movie was also severely tampered by the fact that some of the voice work and particularly the songs were lacklustre.

I’m all for clever inversions of classic myths but this Geppetto makes his replacement son in a drunken rage and the Pleasure Island segment is a training center for Italy’s Fascist Youth - turning boys into animals. So, I loved a lot of it. The purity of Pinocchio runs afloul to even Geppetto’s calloused heart, making its final moments honestly stirring. There’s a hard religious bend (symbolism is anything but subtle), so, I loved a lot of it.

Impressive animation and overall just well produced. However, at times I did feel that the running time was too long and I think the whole part about Carlo and the start could've been a lot shorter, I mean it was obvious what would happen there. It got better towards the end, but falls short of greatness for me due to being limited by the source material / target audience which caused it to be fairly predictable. Still probably worth a watch for the animation and execution.

Visually the stop motion animation is brilliant, however this could stand to be at minimum 30 minutes shorter as it really does drag in places. The screenplay seems rather thin and the songs seem tacked on and unnecessary. IDK maybe the point is really to just marvel in the visuals, but as good as they are I think I'm just personally getting tired of Del Toro's fantasy aesthetics. I did however enjoy Ewan McGregor as the Jiminy Cricket stand in character Sebastian.

Flavored a bit more like Collodi's original work, yet I note Collodi has no writing credit- and that's because it doesn't smoothly follow the book. It sort of takes the spirit of it. And some of the elements often in the Disney version, he seemed to dodge those entirely to avoid those comparisons. The main char is more a brat, is far more exploited for who he is... it's okay, but del Toro engages in folly and weirdness of his own by putting it in WWII.

It's a Pinocchio movie, sure, and it has its limits therefore but it is definitely justified since 1) it explores life and death in an interesting and sentimental manner and 2) it takes place in WWII era Italy which introduces some new elements to the story. But again, in the end there is a formula it has to follow so it does. If only the songs were more memorable.

This is a film adaptation that I imagine is a lot more faithful to the original text, compared to the Disney version. It's safe to say it's a less child friendly version of the story, though it only get a PG rating but it does mention Mussolini, war etc. and tragedy is a key part of the plot, so that may be upsetting for some kids. I appreciate that the 2D/stop motion animation must have taken quite some time to pit together and film - the effects are pretty impressive. It's pretty engrossing.

In the first ten minutes, Geppetto's real son dies in a bombing, and that's not the saddest thing that happens in this film. I am amazed when someone can take source material that everyone has seen multiple times, and make it feel fresh. All you need to add is Fascist Italy. Looking forward to Robin Hood in Nazi Germany.

This is the 5th adaptation of Pinocchio I've seen (4 on film and 1 on stage) and this is easily the most interesting one. The stop-motion animation is stunningly gorgeous at times, and the decision to set it in Fascist Italy feels like such a natural and obvious choice, I'm surprised it hasn't been done before. However, the pacing does drag at points, with the film overall feeling about 10-15 minutes too long, and the musical numbers were fine but unexciting.

As beautiful as del Toro’s Pinocchio is in design and conceit the film never quite gains the intended emotional power, despite the sharp contrast drawn between the love of the puppet’s family and the historical darkness encroaching on the country. It’s a marvel to look at and think about, but not much to feel, as if Del Toro was so immersed in the stop-motion minutiae of the film’s design that he lost track of the drama. His Pinocchio never quite becomes a real boy.

A boy with a “borrowed soul” eventually learns that overcoming that state is less a matter of escaping artificiality than of adopting the tragic knowledge of the mortal condition. Transported to the interwar period, that is, to the age of industrial war and mediatically-facilitated group behaviour, it also concerns the struggle against these equally tragic and artificial (technological) collective tendencies. Looks pretty, but the dialogue does not avoid some schmaltz and the songs are variable.

Cf. my review of Marriage Story, Netflix movies have this irritating tendency of keeping a foot on the brake and never pushing its disturbing elements too far. A Pinocchio movie also has no right of being 2 hours long, shave off a solid 25 minutes and you have a better film that focuses more fittingly on the father/son relationship.
