Too polished for the content, yet still impressive. Especially the first part of the Eagle Bar scene. Kuba Kowalski is a one good chap, but no one beats Alain Leroy.

The Greek Yorgos Javellas kicked off the 50's with his portrait of an alcoholic in "O Methystakas", and quite a few European movies in that vein seem to have followed. Chabrol's French New Wave forerunner "Le Beau Serge", for instance was released the same year as Has' Petla. Petla is perhaps a more "sober" movie than the others, but the lead actor's drunk impression just isn't very good, and that really hurts the film's effectiveness.
