I just really didn't like this film. Kid acting was terrible but the adults were possibly worse. The story was simple yet cliche and very predictable, so what was left were some frequently sub par effects and that's about it. I will give Elliot some credit as a cgi creation, but he was used really poorly for the most part with 'Magic' constantly referenced but rarely shown. After an hour I wished it was over but I was committed to finishing. I may have been better off if I bailed at that time

Excellent film that takes the darkness of the world seriously, doesn't pander to the "can't pay attention" generation, and steps confidently through a world where believing in the unseen makes more sense than not. Lowery has made a film that understands the value of believing in something more than ourselves (and what we can attain for ourselves) to make it through the difficult lives we lead in this messed up world. I am grateful for this film (and this filmmaker).

Feels very outdated for 2016. For the record, I'd sleep in in the forest for five years, too, just to snuggle in Bryce Dallas Howard's ever so sweet bosom for a brief eternity.

It might not be saying much, but it’s easily the best of the live action Disney remakes. .

A brilliantly unpretentious family melodrama that, in so many ways, supersedes the original tale. Connects the age-old threads of belonging and childlike faith, while always looking at the world with wide-eyed wonder and an open heart. Faith in humanity: +1.

The BFD? The Dragon Book? Disney remade one too many live-action films of their animated classics in 2016. As a result Pete's Dragon (2016) ended up in the shadows of the much more ambitious The Jungle Book (2016) and The BFG (2016). On the plus side Pete's Dragon is better then both of them! Kind of a back to basics as to what made family/kid's movies so enduring when I was younger. And it worked real well in my household.

It's one of those really "nice" films. A "feel good" in every sense of the word, and it won't do much in the way of exciting you but it is very much an easy viewing experience. The CGI dragon looks great and feels seamless, though I thought they introduced him too soon. The cast is great, but is a little hampered by very lame dialogue (typical of a kids film). Enjoyable but forgettable.

The rebooted, live-action rendition of Pete's Dragon is really nothing new. And it's not just because it's a modern re-envisioning of a 1977 Disney cartoon. It's because we've seen the basic building blocks of this tale mixed and stirred together again and again at the moviehouse: the troubled kid, the misunderstood otherworldly companion, the longing for unconditional love and family, the selfish outside threat, the need for bravery and justice (pluggedin.com)

I was very disappointed by this movie. It got great reviews and I expected more... but the whole movie seemed to me like a giant plot hole. Elliott seems like a parable for imaginary friends and letting go and growing up... but he never does... and why does everyone want to catch the dragon... and how can they if the dragon can turn invisible... and how can't they if the dragon moves somewhere else? It's beautiful... but there's no thinking here.

If you liked The Neverending Story you'll probably like this. A gentle dragon adopts an orphaned young boy. There are hints of the Jungle Book plotline but in the Northwest woods, how long can you hang out in a loincloth. Ahem. Try to suspend your disbelief, viewers. Just ride the friendly dragon. Some issues with 3D screen darkness but woods are dark anyway. Enjoy Robert Redford as your slightly scruffy somewhat eccentric Grandpa. Who knew this would be his fate?

Pete's Dragon is a boring, but ultimately harmless, movie aimed at children that panders to its target audience to the point where more adults are going to fall asleep than be entertained. It has as much conflict as a genial after-school special, adults who don't in any way communicate like actual adults, bad and/or bland acting performances, and a good CGI dragon that the film can't even make us feel is worthy of our awe. As such, Pete's Dragon isn't worthy of our time or money.

A movie radiating warmth in every shot. Set in the perspective of a child, Pete's Dragon is almost overwhelming for the kids and decent enough for the adults. Great cast, average CGI and some good dialogue bring you in while the paper thin plot is the weakest chain in the link.

A watchable live-action film with a dragon that's still cartoonish. You won't find anything original in this movie, but that's not something its target audience (kids) will care about.

The charmless songs of the 70s film are replaced with some truly awful ballads on the soundtrack of this non-musical. Beyond the fact that an orphan named Pete is friends with an invisible dragon this barely resembles the earlier movie. Criminally wasting its Pacific Northwest backdrop, it does build to a satisfying climax, and Redford effortlessly adds charm, but Elliot the dragon is sorely lacking in personality.

Cute and sweet but rather formulaic. I liked that the dragon was furry instead of the more snake like scales we often see associated with dragons. Would make a good family movie night flick or early show at a drive-in theatre.

This is a pretty horrible film. The soundtrack doesn't fit at all, the direction and acting doesn't work, ultimately is a big budget movie that desperately wishes it was an indie film. In fact had they gone indie and made it so you never knew if Elliott was would've worked a lot better than this.

It's difficult for a film like this with such a standard Disney arc and no nostalgia attached to really resonate with me. A few eye-rolling moments of dialogue and a lukewarm narrative don't really make it soar to the heights of other Disney greats. It's ok though I suppose, but there are just a ton of better Disney stories.

I've never seen the original animated, but it's okay, since this is basically Tarzan anyway. And there's the opening, where Bambi gets his revenge on the humans who killed his mom. Karl Urban is in it, as a not very convincing bad guy.

The soothing Miyazaki-esque beginning turns into the same cloying family adventure that's always being told. And such hyper editing - just like when he ground his Malick tendencies into pulp in his first feature, Lowery again seems like a real overachiever.

This movie was just draggin' on and on... So, Disney did a remake. This was of a movie from the 70's about a boy and his dragon. The problem is, this remake doesn't really follow the older movie. It's not a musical, it's missing a lot of the fun parts (the movie was way too serious) and why the heck is the dragon mostly dog-looking with the face of a dog and green fur instead of scales? Are scales too scary now?...

Two orphan kids -- one is a dragon -- live happily together in the forest when civilization finds them and they are forced to go separate ways. Beautiful folk tale about families being created -- Pete finds a new home, Elliot flies to meet his kind -- and pretty contemplative -- specially in its first 30 minutes -- for a Disney movie.

You know how most kids movies these days make sure that adults can enjoy them, too? Yeah, this is not one of them. It's very much designed for children, and has very little there for adults to enjoy. It was just so incredibly earnest and genuine all the time, I had trouble getting into it. Right down to the folksy soundtrack. The story was very, very simple and very, very predictable. It's not a bad movie at all, just not one I'd recommend for anyone above the age of 10.

In an age where metaphors, symbols, and agendas run wild among children's films, Pete's Dragon bucks the trends by being a straightforward tale about a boy and his dragon. The themes of family and friendship were well executed, and there's plenty of action throughout. Fegley and Laurence are great, with the focus falling primarily on them as children in a children's film. The adults are left a little underdeveloped, but that's fine. Both innocuous and enjoyable, a rare combination for the genre.

With this remake, Disney went above and beyond, trying to flip the entire feel of the original, which got undermined by the goofiness. If Walt Disney had been alive at the time they did the first version, he likely wouldn't have taken it into the direction they went. So with the new one, they corrected everything that went wrong and try out a fresh lens. As far as the studio's remakes go, this might be their best attempt so far.

I personally thought there would be a more compelling story here, but there really didn't need to be. It ends up being a short and sweet, sincere little tale from Disney that worked really well for a live-action remake. Pete's Dragon carries a good emotional experience with that's warming and easy to sit through. David Lowery really knew what he was doing here. I would recommend this for everybody.

This remake has practically nothing in common with the corny original, which can't help but work in its favour. It's a very gentle, meandering film, and young children are likely to find it boring. One thing that really stands out is that there are no true villains, and that there are shades of grey. You don't see that often enough with family entertainment. (This especially contrasts with the painfully hammy villains in the 1977 film.)
