Pretty terrible. I'm never an adaptation purist, but Jane Austen is all about the subtext and this film is all frothy, bubbly text with nothing underneath it as if they don't trust viewers to read between the lines. They made Anne Elliott into a clumsy messy millennial romcom stereotype, which is the exact opposite of her. No character is faithful and no tension can mount because everyone is saying exactly what they're thinking when they're thinking it and ugh the internet speak was dreadful.

I’m not against modernizing storytelling. Heck, Disney’s Hercules is a great example where modern colloquialisms, reference humor and easter eggs work brilliantly. But when a story is modernized, the narrative tools need to abide by the characters - not the other way around. Here Anne Elliot is completely bastardized to a point where the story doesn’t make sense. You want a sassy girlboss for a female lead? Great. That’s not Anne which was the whole fricking point of the entire book!

As a period take on a modern romcom I think it's perfectly fine. Nothing that special but fairly fun, though Wentworth was a bit dull. That said as an adaption while I thought most of the changes were fine the tonal change was an odd choice, and I so wish media would stop extrovert-afying shy and/or reserved characters. The world would become very boring indeed if every woman was like Lizzy Bennet.

Overall, “Persuasion” is a delightful and refreshing take on Austen’s classic novel. The film might not be for everyone, but it’s a great entry point for newcomers to the genre. The performances are strong, and the technical aspects of the film are impressive. The witty tone and light approach might not please diehard fans of the novel, but it’s a perfect film for those looking for a charming and entertaining period piece.

Probably not the best movie, yet I like the visual, the editing is nice, the colours are nice, there is a weird feeling of "this is not a movie, this is an animated picture". I liked the costumes and the set design too. A competent movie I'd say. And some good fun!

Its poor writing and even worse storytelling is marginally covered by a strong performance by Dakota Johnson, who makes the film almost charming despite its flaccid modernization, missed beats, and the perpetually bellowing Cosmo Jarvis.

I'm Persuaded. Sly, hip, knowing, cute — this is a charming and delightful romantic comedy. The actors are all playing it for laughs; Dakota Johnson is terrific as Anne, but Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mary steals every scene she’s in. I love Jane Austen, but obviously this isn’t one for the purists (although I imagine Jane herself would have laughed uproariously throughout). My advice: Forget that it’s anything to do with Jane Austen and simply enjoy.
