Not as good as his criminally underseen/rated Bad Fever, but this one has the same qualities. He has a great way with these realistic oddball characters. Cera accidentally, at first, showing his new coworker metal is one my fears. That a coworker would find out I’m secretly listening to Crossed Out or whatever.

It's hard to put my finger on why this is impressive for what it is, but it does a lot of conversations well in a restrained and credible manner but still with enough tension to prevent us from getting bored. We also get a universally relatable theme and see the consequences of people being honest and dishonest with each other. Most importantly, Dustin Guy Defa knows how to hold a shot instead of cutting every 3 seconds.

A lot of oh that guy or gal moments were had while watching this. The short scenes with future bigger names etc. Some might say New York was a character in this as well. Wants to be Woody and has only some of the charms

one of those low key, defiantly shaggy little NY indie dramedies we get every year as a superior alternative to sundance's workshopped trash. defa is an exciting talent, treating his characters with great sensitivity, allowing his fabulous cast to glow with inner life despite the rather generic (or in the case of cera's subplot outright misguided) material they're working with. if he can manage such specificity and feeling here, i'm intrigued to see what a more ambitious defa film looks like.

Like getting hugged by a big bushy hipster. Tavi Gevinson does a decent job playing an Ideology Dispenser
