How did this dark piece of murder and foolery with Charles Laughton escape me for so long?! Like all of Charles Laughton's movies, it's all about Charles Laughton. A simpleton banker turned desperate with dept and then stupid with money. A role which Laughton brings so much dimension to with a ton a minor touches. The production might seem simple too, but there are a lot of unusual techniques for its time which almost goes unnoticed if you're not paying attention. This is little gem.
