I'm sorry to get off topic but I've gone through some dark times in my life. I've had my share of hardships and I've struggled at times just to get out of bed and greet the day as anything other than misery, but I've never questioned the futility of life until I saw Bill Duke's imdb page. What's he known for? Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Not Predator. Not the greatest action/sci-fi mix ever concocted. No, the Whoopi vehicle. Anyways, fun but not Point Blank.

Mel Gibson plays "Porter" a first-name-less hold-up man left for dead by his wife and friend for a mere $70 grand. "Porter" is an ass; he's cynical; he's unbeatable; he's unbearable; and he is demanding back his blood money, his 70 grand; or the whole city has hell to pay.

highly watchable and gibson's character is one of my top five favorites of all time, i'd watch a twenty hour mini series to see some more of the crap he would do to get his $70,000.

Reviewing the director's cut: Have you ever wanted to see a film where the protagonist is really an asshole? Not some jerk that really has a heart of gold but is a real, true asshole? Then the director's cut of Payback is completely up your alley. Porter just wants his $70,000 and if he has to kill some guys to get it well then that's how it is. The director's cut is like a black comedy and it works perfectly. The ending fells a bit abrupt but damn what a ride to get there.

I often get this and Ransom mixed up so thought I’d watch it again to remind myself. Kinda like a proto-version of the type of thing Jason Statham started dominating for the next decade, there’s a bit of a cartoonish quality to it, some game performances and it kills a coupla hours, although Gibson’s brooding charm does a lot of the heavy lifting. Loses a bit in the final half-hour and is a forgettable but passable effort that somehow feels a good few years older than it is.

Butchered in post, Payback has a split personality, torn between conflicting registers. Gibson does his thing, and the action hits hard, but it never rises above being another genre entry, and the voiceovers are terrible. Supposedly the director's cut is better.

Saw the payback straight up cut, which removes some of the humour and brings some grit and grimness to this crime film. Also the ugly blue tint in most scenes in the theatrical cutis gone. Voice over is gone. Most of these changes are for the better.

First of all, "Payback" features Mel Gibson when he still was an action hero, the always wonderful Maria Bello, Lucy Liu as a dominatrix and one of the final appearances of James fuckin' Coburn. Secondly, and most importantly, it's fast-paced, has some iconic scenes and will keep your blood pumping throughout; Brian Helgeland, like Porter, is not messing around. Also, to the writers' credit, the few more intimate scenes, such as Porter and Rosie at the diner, feel completely natural.

Third rate rehash of Point Blank. It's not terrible, and has some decent action...but it comes nowhere close to the power of the original film. Allow me to say this with some degree of finality: Mel Gibson is no Lee Marvin.

Good acting, both leading and numberous supporting roles (the usual Lucy Liu character always keeps me turning in good mood). Good music. Good story, enough twists. Very good package indeed. Tough guy with good-looking girls and ugly villians. It's also a dead man walking story, since Porter (without the first name!) is dead in the beginning of the movie. Reminds Point Blank, though not similar odd scenes.
