Tim Sutton's debut feature, likened to films by Gus Van Sant and Pedro Costa, follows a laconic teenager (Max) who moves from an idyllic lakeside town to his father's home in arid suburban Arizona. With mesmerizing imagery of hot summer bike rides and cool lake-bound dives, Pavilion captures the ephemerality and reverie of youth and the fragility of adolescent friendships. A haunting score by the Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop shadows the storyline, echoing its secrets and shouldering its mysteries.

At just 68 minutes, this is almost by definition a bit too simple and slight to really make a huge impact, and even at that length i have to admit it sort of drags at times, yet at it's best moments it also approaches the ephemeral poetry of other great teenage snapshots like Paranoid Park, if not a somewhat softer Gummo. Even more so it resembles a slighter and more removed, yet possibly more genuinely affecting Palo Alto. The nice score by Sam Prekop from The Sea and Cake also helps.

Quite a dull experience. No real plot to speak of, bland characters, essentially just a portrait of some young people in a place. A bit like Boyhood without any of the good bits. The only nice thing I can say is that sometimes Sutton's camerawork, cinematography and music choices came together to create fleeting moments of cinematic pleasure. But that's no excuse to keep going for over an hour.
