Fifteen year old Pauline and her older cousin, model-shaped Marion, go to the Atlantic coast for an autumn holiday. Marion ignores the approaches of a surfer and falls for Henri, a hedonist who is only interested in a sexual adventure and drops her soon. Pauline's little romance with a young man (Sylvain) is also spoiled by Henri. (imdb)

Like most of Rohmer's films, the depth of his characters is the key to the film, and he makes no attempt to make them perfect or even likable. They are, however, very human and in this case we have the story of mixed up love and desire where each character is looking for different things and projects their own desires on everyone else. The little touches in their non verbal actions and reactions are just as important as the dialogue and are captured well by the simple yet effective camerawork.

I don't think I can improve upon the description of this movie in Rohmer's IMDb bio: "a seaside film about adolescents' coming-of-age and the childish antics of their adult chaperones". The world is hardly short of teenager movies that are about sex and growing up and in which all the adults act like fuckheads, but Rohmer has made a good one... partly because you actually believe in these characters (unlike the ones in, say, _Class_), and partly because Rohmer cares what these people feel

Rohmer now introduced in the main page is somewhat undermined or dimmed director of the French New Wave movement. Pauline is a dialogue driven, visually simple -not minimalistic-, flowing movie. Rohmer's perspective of human relations through a summer holiday theme is worthy of attention.

My favorite Rohmer yet, exploring what i'm quickly identifying as his trademark themes with even greater depth and precision than Claire's Knee or Chloe in the Afternoon, in a funnier and more narratively cohesive manner. Not necessarily particularly "cinematic", but like Cassavetes or Leigh he is a master of perceptiveness regarding human behavior. Rohmer is also clearly the godfather of what Whit Stillman would do in the '90s and what Baumbach is doing in the '00s.

Affective, tender but also quite interesting in his structure of dialogues and misunderstandings, Rohmer's coming of age film sustains a distinct sense of youngness, sincere and disarmingly spontaneous.

None of the characters are at all relatable, not one of them seems to have a care in the world besides hooking up, and perhaps fittingly for people so spoiled, their relationship troubles are as boringly superficial as they are elaborate and convoluted. In some of his films Rohmer is able to break this mould, but here he mostly treads water.

This is how to do this type of film: plenty of wit, plenty of pathos, plenty of compassion and plenty of acute observations. This film is masterful.

Have some funny moments and good dialogues about love and sex, but other than that, I think this film was too shallow. I know that Rohmer has no intention whatsoever to create characters with great depth, but even by his standards, they were too effortless. Also, I think it was more didactic than it was supposed to be and the ending was pretty weak.

One of the most naturally sensual and inviting films I know - makes me dream about spending my summer with the characters, even while realizing how fucked up and conflicted everyone is.

My first feature film by Rohmer. As French as they come. Not much happens, just people talking non-stop about love. And yet I found it interesting, captivating and occasionally funny. Although Pauline is a teenager she is more mature than any adult in the film. Rohmer is really good at creating realistic characters. It kind of reminded me of Woody Allen movies. Trivial film, but it got stuck in my head.

I guess I liked this less than the Green Ray and A Summer's Tale just because it's about a teenager and not 20somethings. It's still great and a still-relevant meditation on why we go about romantic/physical relationships the way we do. Rohmer himself said this film is about learning how to lie, which I'd argue is the same thing.

The adults are like children, lying to each other, going behind each other's backs, whilst Pauline is more mature than them, it could be argued that she understands them better than they do and she is certainly more level headed and wise about everything. The idea of the teenager being more mature than the adults is of course a conceit that is used quite often, but rarely with a feeling of such authenticity, rarely in a manner that's handled quite so beautifully and with such charm.

Wow I came here to give this a 65 and that was my PSI. Impressive. So this is pretty much like when you drink a bunch of Barqs root beer and have to pee. You take a huge pee (Claire's Knee) then like 20 minutes later take a smaller, but still successful and enjoyable pee. That's Pauline at the Beach.
