This absolutely splendid little 9-minute film captures to perfection the early virtues of the National Film Board of Canada's "B-Unit" - a group of producers, directors, and other artists who, in the interval between John Grierson and the arrival of full-fledged cinema-verite, collaborated on many documentaries that arguably form the pinnacle of the NFB's achievement. The photography and editing here are terrific, and many of the scenes look like predictors of Guy Maddin's "My Winnipeg". (KG)

What starts as just watching some guy shovel salt on railway switches quickly turns into a reflection on life. Really good short!
