Old fashioned entertainment with a common man against the system story. Provides an insight into life in post WW2 England but some of its comic swipes are still relevant.

Starts off & you're thinking this is a jolly little film, then you get a bit bored & then you're waiting for it to end.The film that is,not your life.

"We always were English, and we'll always be English, and it's just because we are English that we're sticking up for our rights to be Burgundians!" Gloriously funny movie about that plucky WW2 spirit getting all a bit misplaced. Zips along with one thing leading to another and seems to have a cast of millions of chipper Londoners. I would love to have seen it in the cinemas and heard the crowds roar with laughter as they saw themselves up on the silver screen.

At times it treads on that no man's land of absurdity, where it's too silly to accept, but not crazy enough to disregard logic. For the most part, though, it's pretty funny.

Fun film that just rolls along so smoothly that the ending was rather quick. Probably a more more appealing if you were from the area. Nice post-war boost. Fav scene: at the end when they rejoin Britain, the weather suddenly becomes more Britainesque.

What British identity meant after WWII is poked in the side when a London district is discovered to be part of Burgundy and its own sovereign nation, leading to a jovial but great Ealing comedy, one which wonderfully plays into the surreal with its concept while looking at the culture of the time (rationing etc.) with considerable wit. Some may find the ending disappointing, but in reality its a celebration of Britishness as cheek and courage rather than tedious bureaucracy and legislations.

London is split-up when a region in the city declares independence! Post World War II satire the British-way. Becomes almost like a East/West Berlin with the isolated Pimlico finding-out independence is serious business. Not as hectic as a comedy of this kind could have been, but it has its brilliance.

Good fun. The "based on opinion poll" bit made me laugh very hard.

Ealing comedy starts well, with a great cast of typically British eccentrics, but ultimately goes nowhere with its sturdy comic foundation, instead relying on a series of unbelievable sitcom developments which are really not that funny, and don't make a great deal of sense. Holloway is always good to have around, and Rutherford shines in her brief scenes doing her typically dotty eccentric schtick.
