It's an overblown, melodramatic love story set in the midst of Canada's participation in World War 1, and while it could have been better, I'm glad it got made, because hopefully more and better stories can follow.

"Passchendaele" powerfully portrays the devastation of war and the potency of hate. Yet, amidst the chaos, love emerges as a source of purpose. While the film occasionally oversteps and concludes somewhat ambiguously, a particular scene towards the end, where hospital occupants appear to gaze upon a distant battlefield, feels misplaced. Directorial decisions like these render the movie average.

More a drama than a war film but still has some well done battle scenes. It's a Canadian film, which is nice, and although it's a bit long it's still worth a look.

an alright film about Canada's role in the battle of Passchendale. the film does a great job of getting the horror of trench warfare right, the black humor of the soldiers in the field & the atmosphere back home. what really hurts the film is the love story(it goes on too long) and a scene near the end of the film is just too over the top(those who've seen the film know what scene i'm referring to). If you like history, are Canadian or enjoy history films, this may be worth a look.

The war scenes are really well done in this movie. I think the movie looses something during the "at home" scenes of the film. It is nice to see a Canadian film made with a decent budget. Overall I can't quite recommend this film.

Quite a disappointing film about the First World War, focussing more on the personal story of the director's family. While I understand his desire to tell the story, he tragically failed in making it more than just a family history.

A drama first and a war movie second, people need to realize this is not trying to be a "Saving Private Ryan", so deal with it. The love story is good, the war action is phenomenal, albeit scarce. So take it for what it is, a drama/war (emphasis on the drama), and you will not be disappointed.

This film is a disgrace to the memory of the Canadian WWI soldiers of this battle. The worst soap opera style script imaginable. I could not finish watching this rubbish.

It's overblown and melodramatic in some scenes. Some character's are caricatures which make the flick somewhat simple. But other parts have beautiful cinematography and some actors give a good performance.

Fighting scenes were great, but boy, they sure could have trimmed down the middle a bunch.

The kid in this movie is so incredibly unlikeable, I was glad when he died. He was basically asking for it.

If Brent Butt was given 20 million dollars and told to make a war movie. This would be it.

I believe it could have been better, but as a landmark film, it did not disappoint.

Yeah, a big part of this movie is the love story. And yeah, a lot of it is set in Canada and not in the war. At the same time, I don't see it as being "overblown", as others seem to feel. There is a very real story behind this flick, for those who are willing to do the research and find out about it. The battle of Passchendaele is a very important peice of Canadian military history, and hopefully will lead into more stories of the like being told through film.
