Fuck, ballet again. And 13 minutes of it. The motion technique that McLaren utilizes here doesn't even seem that innovative for 1968. As bored as I was, though, I must admit there was a certain haunting beauty to it.

Innovative and boring. It would work great as some kind of looping installation piece; watch a contiguous minute or so of it and then move on.

Intriguing limited animation, great music, and ballet dancers whose every move reveal the years of sweat and dedication they must have put into their craft. I don't think of myself as a balletomane by any means, but it's very easy for me to relish stuff like this

This experiment in combining dance and effects results in a short movie that is ghostly and genuinely cinematic.

It does have a beauty too it, especially in the second half but mostly I found it slow and dull.

Ballet doesn't really do anything for me, but McLaren's use of after-effects transforms it into another art form. It wasn't immediately appealing to me like his on-film animations are, but it kept growing and growing on me as I watched it.

My second experience with McLaren did not disappoint. The after image effects that are made to enhance the movements not only do that but literally add another dimension to it. Aside from the beauty of the dancing, the aspect that stuck me the most was the contrast between dark and light. He executed that contrast so damn well - almost as if to highlight the two dancers. Norman McLaren's manipulation of the camera is exquisite and it shows here.

The after-image effect can be a fairly psychedelic trick, and it's used nicely in this short.

While aesthetically engaging, ballet is repulsive for me no matter what form it takes.

This is pretty surreal, but interesting and a good example of Norman McLaren's experimentation with animation and film.
Probably good to watch when on acid.
