Billy Crystal is a tired, unlikeable, unfunny old fool who should have retired years ago. Coincidentally, that also describes his character in this film.

Seen the trailers for this thing? Yeah, like that. Midler sings, Crystal wistfully monologues about New York baseball in the 1950's, and Tomei attempts to evince a woman in her late thirties. The three kids are exceptional actors, though.

Parental Guidance is surprisingly more enjoyable than many have branded it. Ok the humour is occasionally goofy and falls flat. But Crystal carries this film brilliantly. I've always been a fan of his and he brings a light hearted likability to this film. And he has some great dialogue and one liners. I usually like Tomei but not so much here. And Midler is annoying. I don't know why so many people dislike this film, it's harmless fun and family friendly. Great for kids, tolerable for adults.

With the exceptions of My Cousin Vinny and Wrestler, why does Tomei always feel like a finger stuck down my throat?

This definitely isnt the greatest comedy ever but it certainly knows its target demographic. I think kids will really enjoy this film as there is quite alot of slapstick humour which kind of works in small quantities. There are little one liners and visual gags which makes this a really easy watch and you will find yourself laughing. There are some annoying moments especially regarding the youngest child but these sequences dont last long enough to leave any lasting damage. Solid family fun.

This was a cute family movie. Yeah, it did rely heavily on making jokes about old people trying to figure out new things. I also think that this movie does point out how different parenting has become. Where as Billy Crystal's character is used to saying no to children, Marisa Tomei's character uses words like "think about the consequences or use your words" so when the movie was being frustrating with parenting methods, there were some light and cute moments that make you laugh and smile.

I had a lot of trouble even paying attention after about 10 minutes into this movie because I felt like I'd been lobotomized with a spork. I wanted to slap some sense into the adults and strangle the kids. This movie goes for the shallowest humor possible and gives the characters even less depth. It gives the audience no credit for being anything more than single-celled organisms. It's flat, it's stupid, it's irritating, and it's not funny.

Parental Guidance could've been a decent movie. No, seriously! There are elements in this flick that offer a fun, clever take on the genre; the sequences dealing with the youngest kid's imaginary friend are surprisingly intelligent. But the good is, alas, outweighed by mediocrity. And worse. A shameful over-reliance on comedy mined from conflict between the old and the new (Billy Crystal doesn't get Twitter! LOL!) undermines the whole film. full rvw @ Letterboxd

Not great, but it definitely has its feel-good moments and isn't bad for a lazy day at home.

Has some funny stuff, but some really stupid filler as well. It was like half of the small budget it must have had was paid by the city of Atlanta to turn it into a travelogue about that fair but now cheapened city.
