From IMDB.com's Goofs: "(at around 32 mins) When Dennis receives a couple books from Randy (who's also operating the camera); the beginning of the shot shows Randy filming his reflection on one of the TV's; but it's clearly another person filming the shot, the guy's shirt is white and his face doesn't belong to that of Randy." The most terrifying thing about this movie is the phrase "And his face doesn't belong to that of Randy." Yowza.

Top badass moment? The bubble 'thing' in the tank. Sadly, despite its best efforts, it wasn’t as entertaining as the pool cleaner in PA2; it just didn’t have the same star quality. Still, it kept me thoroughly entertained throughout the long periods of nothingness. Which is more than can be said for Julie's and Dennis's attempt to make a sex tape. Was that ugly, grey underwear and crappy, shapeless shirt really the best she could come up with?! No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Better then the second, but still extremely boring and bad. It feels like a really bad parody of the first, which was actually somewhat decent. The people in this are just annoying. The main problem with these movies is they take at least 30 minutes of nothing to build it up. We need to know just how normal these people are. Then after nothing, we get 30 minutes of barely anything. Then to top it off, 30 minutes of what now is very generic jump scares, and gimmicks that were better in the first.

These movies are getting less effective as they go along. Granted, part of that is simply the premise and aesthetic growing old, but the decay is obvious, and in the moments where this one tries to shake things up (such as the hair-pulling scene) it just goes over the top. The ending comes across as nonsense for the sake of nonsense.

If you're a fan of slamming doors this is just the movie for you. The amount of doors slammed is high, very high. There's some inventive staging, like the camera mounted on a swaying fan body. Scares are not plentiful in PA3 but the ones that are there work pretty well. I think one of the main reasons i'm overall sort of positive about the Paranormal Activity series is that it, by design of the concept, has no soundtrack and people act realistically and not like they're in a horror

This is a higher score than I gave to the first one... which could mean one of two things... I haven't seen the first one in a while and I don't know if I was being too harsh on it, or this entry just stuck the landing for me. The oscillating camera is genius, and a lot of the scares land here waaay better than they did in the predecessor, and even the first one that I can remember. A schockingly good third entry in a series that I didn't expect could offer me anything past passing the time.

Like the other two, it's total nonsense (drop the camera and fucking run), takes too long to get going (nothing fucking happens for 30 minutes), but there's a few good scares and the finale is pretty intense. I guess at this point I enjoy the idea of the story more than the execution.

What a pleasant surprise. There's nothing particularly original here, but an atmosphere of dread prevades the entire movie thanks to its wise resolve to leave as much as it can to the imagination, which is just where the first sequel failed. The utilization of children is also cleverer than in most horror cinema. Immerse yourself and you'll be rewarded with an experience to rival the original.

Infuriatingly harebrained. They're not even trying anymore. Alternates between deadlly dull and off-puttingly, hysterically over-the-top, with no genuine scares to speak of and a surprising level of rank incompetence on display. Plus, it flat-out cheats, whipping up an over-elaborate, nonsensical backstory for the whole series that leaves you with way more questions than answers. The worst horror sequel to come down the pike in some time. Skip it.

Gee whiz, that footage from 1988 sure did look like it was filmed in 2011. As with the second film the first hour is drab, uninspired, cliched bullshit (although the final kitchen scene at the first house was well done) except this actually climaxes with scenes that are atmospheric and tense...and then ruined by a preposterous nonsensical twist and "shock" ending. Congratulations directors, you made a marginally better film than one of the worst sequels of all time.

Paranormal Activity 3 is the worst film I've ever seen in a movie theater. There's absolutely no suspense or story beats. As soon as the rising action starts, the film abruptly ends 5 seconds later. As a prequel, it merely serves as an extremely mundane trailer for the most increasingly disappointing trilogy of all time.

A strain of harsh, reductive criticism exists for this series as an excuse for scenes of trivial jump scares, without acknowledging how effective they are in their construction – of course, this is cinema as theme park ride (sorry Marty) but is highly effective for that - a jack-in-the-box primed to explode its load every 15 minutes or so. Might have worked even better if it had discarded the limitations of its “found footage” design (which it seems intent on violating anyway).

Somehow this third entry in the overall pointless horror franchise turned out to be rather thrilling. Granted not all that scary. The actors are all fine, even the kids. If nothing else, the 1988 setting and recording style will probably win over the horror nuts out there.

The effects were far more impressive and there are some much heavier, scarier moments. But the plot ends up rather ridiculous and that's really what ruins it. Hard to imagine any kind of continuity connection to other films, from this.

Making the leads be little girls at least shakes things up a bit, but the whole thing feels much more formulaic than its predecessors with the long drawn out waits for the jump scares. Coupled with what feels like more night shots in the second half it gets really tedious and boring, and less scary than either of them as a result. There are a lot more annoying little things too, like more shaky camera, more blatantly stupid decisions and an even more illogically big fancy house.

The trip back in time shakes things up a bit, and it starts out with a more effective and scarier tone than the second film. As things progress however, it starts taking the easy way out and can't keep up the interest. The ending is pretty bad, though it always seems to be in these kinds of films.

Okay, it's a theme park ride, and it makes a few bold demands of the viewer's suspension of disbelief--not the spooky shit, the cameras and character motivations--but it told a pretty good ghost story; furthermore, it didn't lean on the scares or the expository dialog as heavily as the previous effort. It did lean on the scares--no question about it--but there were still allowances made to actually telling a story.

Somehow a big step up from the previous two movies. Coming from the petty dickhead ghost of PA2, I actually felt some maliciousness from the demon in this one. After PA2 tried to sell me on a ghost pulling a pool cleaner out of the pool being scary, I felt there were some genuine chills to be had here (namely the thing with the sheet; how appropriate for a ghost). Also cults. I love cults in horror. Can't get enough of 'em.

Joost and Schulman bring their mockumentary skills to the franchise, managing to keep the plot running while they find room to provide a bunch of new scares -- including one classic childhood spook and a couple of marvelous horror shots at the end. For a sequel, this is quite decent -- and immensely underrated.

Door and windows closing aren't scary. While the fan camera creates suspense it never gets used properly and it turns bores the viewer. But that could be said about every scene in this movie. Once shit hits the fan the movie turns into a laughable joke that keeps on going. The end of the movie is also a wtf, out of left field twist that comes off as desperate instead of cool. By far one of the worst movies I've seen.

I'm not the biggest fan of "found footage" horror films but this one was pretty neat. This is the first Paranormal Activity movie that I've seen and I liked it. It had a few really good make-you-jump moments that I liked. I wouldn't say that the acting was awe inspiring but they did an ok job. I did like the twist at the end though, I didn't see that coming at all. I did gasp several times when something really crazy happened in the film. They keep making these so they must all be decent.

These sequels are really just unnecessary. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) and this film just use the exact same formula and it becomes pretty predictable. While it's a prequel, but it doesn't really shed much light on the series. I found most of it be pretty boring. The last 20 minutes was quite good though and sufficiently creepy. Overall, I thought it was probably a bit better than the second one, but still just a copy of the original.

I may be in the minority, but I found this the weakest film of the (so-far) trilogy. Too many of the same tricks from the last two which got old, and they threw together this bizarre background plot that makes no sense without even more context from a fourth film (or is the fourth making sense too much to hope for? we'll see, maybe.)

Meh...

In my opinion, this part is better than the second. It's more intense and has a more original plot and series of events. Although some things become predictable, it still succeeds in increasing my heart beat and makes me want to turn away my face for what might come. Each movie reveals a part of the bigger story and creates a hunger for more. I'm still amazed how the simplicity of the concept can have such an impact. There is only one way to watch this movie: alone, at night, in the dark...

I haven't seen the first two films so I can't compare, but this was disappointing. The handheld cam is definitely old hat now, used so frequently it now feels stale and artificial. To me the best horror films either feature a threat whose nature is largely unknown to the audience or a threat that is known but so super-humanly powerful you dread its presence at all times. This film, on the other hand, tells you early on the source of the haunting and actually kills its own scariness factor.

Probably would have been about as good as the second if it wasn't for the godawful ending and stupid twist. It's hard to deny that the formula is over staying its welcome a bit, but at the same time... at least the film makers get that sometimes it's what doesn't happen that's scary. That's pretty much the premise of these movies. Still, this can be tense, and enjoyable, and scary, and I loved the first one. Just please, don't make anymore. It's unnecessary.

Made me jump a few times, and there are even hints of a good story in here, albeit only for the last five minutes or so. Definitely more a money grabbing scheme than a piece of art, but worth seeing at the cinema. The scares are all pretty predictable stuff, but as I said there is almost a good story here... progress!

It's hard to compare this one to the others in the series. The first half is more of the same, and its up to par. The second half is different, yet still very good. Yet for some reason I can't put my finger on, it seems like this one didn't quite deliver as many scares as it could have.

We'll get it out there right away that it does what it's supposed to do, and that's scare people. I also actually consider it to be a BETTER movie than the second one (despite my ranking the second one an 80 and this a 70). This one's ranking falls down because of the ending. I'm finding it hard (and this is totally on a personal level) to piece the whole story together. Is it a demon, or a witches coven? What about the house fire alluded to in the first movie? A lot seems to be left unanswered.
