It badly wants to be Spike Lee's Malcolm X; via documentary footage, intense visual style, and period pop music. But it isn't a genre savvy epic like Gandhi or Lawrence of Arabia. Instead it's a cartoonish fight against 70's racism that's essentially a blaxploitation film with Forrest Gump-esque invented characters placed in history. It's nice to see Angela Bassett once again play Betty Shabazz--making it like an Avengers crossover of biopics. But that's not enough for a recommendation. Pass.
