This movie is underrated! I always enjoyed the idea of a modern take on a noir set in a very atypical tropical setting. There are some nice-looking locations and shots in this movie. The plot is ok, fairly original but with a silly ending. Harrelson and Sevigny put in good performances but Elisabeth Shue's femme fatale steals the show. Also the most accessible film by a difficult, inconsistent director.

a great mystery, with a few nods here and there to classic noir. i really only developed a true appreciation of woody harrelson after seeing this movie.

Elisabeth Shue is so ridiculously hot in this film. Oh and Woody Harrelson does some decent acting as well or something. Did I mention Elisabeth Shue is hot in this?

Sun drenched noir is completely implausible in its plotting, and suffers further from a miscast Shue, but as a simple genre exercise it is still fun, with Harrelson a fine seedy hero and Sevigny standing out in support as a Lolita-esque sex pot. So blatantly stylistically heightened (and overheated) that it's ultimately impossible to become emotionally invested; tighter pacing could have papered over this.

It's a comedy, and a funny one at that. Quirky, good fun, with two characters trapped in The Postman Always Rings Twice, except that the Femme's not really very good at being Fatale, and her mark has a few surprises in him.

2nd view. really good, genre-ridiculing, underrated, shiny example of neo-noir --- "Elisabeth Shue is so ridiculously hot in this film." I second that.

So slow...

The slow plodding unfolding keeps pace with the sweat slowly accumulating. Elizabeth is so tasty its all i can do to maintain my focus on the lackluster story, wishing the story was hers & not Woody's, sure we want to know what's going on but not knowing is more interesting than finding out.
