DumbFellas. I'm quite surprised to have enjoyed a Michael Bay movie this much, honestly. If this isn't the man's best work, it's easily his best stuff since The Rock 17 years ago. Incidentally, The Rock is also the best thing about this movie, playing a composite character unlike anything we've seen from the man before -- though Anthony Mackie takes turns stealing scenes as well. The real life story is harrowing, and this one starts glossy before slowly peeling back the veneer. Chilling stuff.

Big departure for Bay, he's never made anything like this before. Arguably the most homoerotic movie ever made. Filled with great one liners, spastic camera work, and the rock stealing every scene he's in. An unbelievable story that you can't help but wonder how far the truth was stretched -- I'd read the book if it existed

Bay's best film in ~15 years, almost by walkover. Certainly his most unique, and (I almost can't believe it) it even seems to have a point to make. I found myself surprised at how much I liked it during the first act, but it goes on for way too long - before it was finished, I just wanted to go to sleep. Also, a breakout performance by Dwayne Johnson, who manages to portray a complex and conflicted character very believably, stealing every scene. And he delivers genuine laughs.

The real story's so bizarre that this can't help but be compelling (you wonder what someone like Scorsese would've done) & Bay's habit of editing frantically gives this an energy that never makes the almost 3 hour film feel like it's dragging. At the same time, that energy stays the same & doesn't really allow pace to increase as the stakes do. It also still feels too long as Bay's increasingly fratboy-ish comedy bits & ADHD edits start to make it seem like ALL 3 leads are on drugs.

This is when Michael Bay is at his barebones and his funniest in decades. He's suffering in the same vein as Emmerich and Snyder; good, compelling and competent directors stuck in soulless franchises. That being said, out of the 3, Bay managed to make a good film during his entrapment; a dumb film about dumb people doing dumb shit, and it's a fun ride. I don't know how i didn't rate this til now. Bayfellas.

The Spartan levels of homo-eroticism make it easy to forget the fact that Mr. Bay has been wagging Megan Fox's fox-hocks at us for the past half-decade. Perhaps he was visited in his sleep by the Ghost of Christmas-rainbow and made this movie after being shown a world of unbalanced testosterone ying and estrogen yang. I have to give it to the Bay-ster, though. He showed some real restraint with this one. It must have been difficult for him not to blow up at least one thing up during each scene.

Bay's best film that I have seen. A mean spirited murder fest which a lot of humor mixed in. The Rock stretches his acting capability a little bit further, solidifying his presence as one of the top action actors in an albeit withering genre.

Bay needs to stick with doing more movies like this. He's at the "top" of his game when he's not trying to do serious human emotions or any kind of real drama. He has the mentality of a small child and his bombastic directing style is well suited for slapstick comedy and showcasing absurdity. There are some amusing performances here by by the Rock and everyone else involved.

Loud, brash and maybe a bit long, but most of the criticisms are off the mark, no doubt the result of the (understandable) general collective dislike of the director. Presenting this grisly but true story in terms of the dark side of the American dream may not be new, but Bay's portrayal of bumbling psychopathy is in much the same vein as Coen brothers films like FARGO and BURN AFTER READING, except that here the characters are a little more stereotypical and even less sympathetic.

of the four movies (mis?)construed as outright satires of the american dream this year (s. breakers, canyons, b. ring), this is probably the most unsettling. the problem is bay's satirical elements are just insulting token gestures in an otherwise frequently+typically horrifying endorsement of all-american dick-waving machismo, jock vulgarity, bigotry, etcetc. the question here is if michael bay *knows* what a dick he is, does that make him better or even worse?

I'll certainly give Bay this: This feels like a much more personal film than anything he's done lately. It's as weird and dark and grimy and defiantly anti-mainstream as almost anything I've seen in the art house lately. The movie's incredibly high energy level betrays it to some extent though as the film becomes immensely draining by the end. I saw this a couple days after Great Gatsby, a film 20 minutes longer than this one, and this one felt WAY longer. I even checked the time on my phone.

The problem for me is that as it went on I cared less and less. If I would have rated it at its early stages, then it might have gotten an 8. I felt like it just went on way too long for what it was trying to do. With that said, it did have some really funny parts, and the Rock especially was golden. Hell, the other two were fantastic as well but the Rock stole the show. A few more jokes here and there, a little more excitement, and this could have been great. Asitstands, it's fun and that's it.

A decent attempt to be different by Bay, but it gets really weighted down with juvenile humor. Some of it feels racist, homophobic, and misogynistic... you know, like all Bay films. Still, there's actually something to like here, and despite it being a negative experience it feels like a step in the right direction.

The story of the Sun Gym Gang is fascinating and horrifying: extortion, violence, death, and drugs mixed together in the Miami sun. It would make a great film. This is not that film. Michael Bay fumbles the execution subtly but crucially, making the gang's victims almost as unsavory as they are. By turns sexist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic, it's a distressingly ugly film. Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie do all right, and there are a couple of decent macabre moments, but it's all too dumb.

This is such a weird, but fun movie. In typical Michael Bay fashion, he comes through with his inconsistent writing and controversial humor. Not to mention, this "true story" is probably thinly portrayed in any realistic way. Still, Wahlberg, Johnson, and Mackie are so fun to have on screen in this. The writing and progression is so bazaar and out there that I can't help but be entertained. This isn't good, but I wasn't expecting it to. I'm happy with what I got.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a movie where the fault so clearly lies in its direction. The actors here are all good -- especially Johnson -- and the script is far smarter than I was expecting. Unfortunately, the modest intelligence of the script is bowled over by stupid directorial decisions, like reminding us that this fake story is really a true story. There really does seem to be a clear Coen Brothers influence here, and it's also clear that Michael Bay has no idea why their movies work.

The horrible narration sinks it a bit, but it's easily Bay's best movie in years. It's all a little tongue in cheek (excessive slo-mo amped all the way up, for instance). The Rock is the best part. It's still all about flash, and it gets surprisingly dark all with a tinge of humour. It's a bit bloated (or swole) but it's not that bad.

Interesting tale, good performances (especially - again - from Johnson), and just about manages to balance the approach of telling a pretty horrific true story in a played-for-laughs fashion. I fall into the camp that believes that Michael Bay, despite often not making the effort, can be a good, incredibly obvious satirist, and Pain & Gain is probably his best effort yet. It revels in the obvious, the juvenile and the stupid - which really serves the sexed-up, exaggerated and slapstick version of the events this film portrays. The Rock pretty much steals every scene he's in though - he's an excellent comedic actor with the right material.

It's flawed as hell; it's dangerously unfocused, Bay's ADD-style editing is obnoxious as ever, and some of the humour is really stupid. On the other hand, the script is actually pretty good (this is really a dark comedy about the American Dream gone wrong) and the performances are great. We can't reasonably expect Bay to have any discipline or subtlety, but I think a wild and even occasionally sharp (!) dark comedy like this is a more productive use of his style than his usual blow-em-ups.

With this thoroughly fictionalized, crude caricature of a true story, Michael Bay cements his place as our day's most amoral and despicable filmmaker - no small feat. I kind of wish for him, Wahlberg, and everyone involved in P&G to endure a month of torture, just to see if they still find it so comical, and as survivors - how they'd feel about the idea of a film that mocks their victimhood and glamorizes their torturers.

The satire almost works, and the three leads did amuse me more or less consistently. Shalhoub's character grew very annoying, however. Besides it being gross in a that-was-uncalled-for way, the main problem with Bay's comedy is - ironically, with his subject matter - that it's in a serious need of a trim. It felt like it lasted for-fucking-ever!

Bay lights up the screen with oil, sweat, and sun, and plays his misogynistic melee tale for all its worth, consistently objectifying women and glorifying the volatile chumps and their violent ways. We don't understand these characters in any way, so why spend 130 slow minutes trying to laugh off their bloody antics? Bay thinks he's delivered a cautionary tale, but instead his penchant for cinematic destruction winks at antagonist morons doing grotesque things that are meant to look oh so cool.

I'm very torn when it comes to Pain & Gain. It's a relatively well-paced adaptation of a true story, one that's funny and has some social criticism to go along with that. It also represents a much-needed change for Michael Bay, and a reminder that he can get a touch smarter than his work on Transformers -- although not smart enough to actually do something clever with his overuse of low-angle shots. Is Pain & Gain good? I'm not sure, but it's interesting and I recommend checking it out.

Viewed February 9, 2022. When a movie opens with a line like, “I believe in fitness,” it has my attention, and Bay focuses all of his hyper-masculine energy into a blaring satire about lost and misbegotten American dreams. Considering how lacking Bay’s technique is in his other films, I found myself generally impressed by the way he uses humor to undercut his characters and his bombastic stylistics, ending scenes on downbeats and sliding quick punchlines in between his erratic editing choices.

The script has little care or appreciation for its blue-collar lead characters, which will be offputting to class-conscious watchers. It makes a joke out of life but, even though I don't disagree with its conception of our human experience, we don't turn to art to be reminded of the meaninglessness of our existences. Still, dark-but-plausible satire is gripping and this managed to keep my interest, which most Bay movies do not. Pain & Gain may be Michael Bay's best movie.

Some dumb people do some pretty bad stuff. The movie does a good job to show that the main characters are pretty terrible human beings. To make this a comedy though, they have to be somehow likeable, so they made the victim a total asshole. This makes the main characters somewhat good in relation because "that asshole had it coming". But since it's a true story, you shouldn't actually be rooting for them. And I'm not entirely sure if the movie manages to draw that line successfully.

As a riotous deconstruction of the American Dream, Pain & Gain would make a great double bill with Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers, two visually dazzling tales of mindless self-indulgence that do anything but glorify its subjects. Would've rated this a notch higher had it not been for the 30 minutes wasted on the whole Griga storyline. But for what it's worth, this is easily Bay's best film since The Rock. Bay is a technically talented director who effectively executes a personal vision here, a vision of humanity's head down a public toilet set to spiteful laughter. There are some really dumb scenes and side characters along with annoying camera shots that are consistent with Bay. But there are also some great characters and an incredibly interesting story with a solid script as well. It oddly feels bad to say that I'm disappointed by this. The machismo is something Bay tackles with finesse, but it can only carry the film so far.

Although hindered at times by overly edgy stop-start angle cuts and other intensely distracting production, the script and performances are all pretty high quality in this one. I hate to keep going out of my way to criticise this one person, but I really feel that just about any top tier director other than Mr. Bay would have delivered these same positive qualities without half submerging them in slow motion gimmicks. Nonetheless, not a bad movie.

Here's some trivia fun: I watched this film twice in one week! It's hard to believe Bay had this ridiculous post-modern baby in him. Make no mistake, this film is as juvenile as all of his recent films, perhaps even more so, but his mean, idiotic machismo is a shade of wonderful when done as a satire.

Michael Bay's graphic crime comedy Pain & Gain is as extravagantly bombastic as you would think, a crazed, manic action movie on steroids, and I loved every breathless, exciting, hilarious, even startlingly inventive minute of it. The performances are all quite good, especially The Rock, who should've been nominated in fact. And Bay's signature ostentatiousness truly works as a natural interpretation of the delirious material as opposed to just superficial glaze.

Enjoyable even if it feels a bit forced at times, main characters are all excellent - I have a soft spot for Shalhoub in anything.

I can't believe I enjoyed it as much as I did. It IS all over the place, but in a good way. Almost feels like Tony Scott.

Imagine Fargo a la Scorsese, except directed with all the subtlety and talent of a Michael Bay film. I'll say this: it's definitely not the worst film Bay has made, but I don't think he's given me any more faith in his ability to handle a morally complex script. Still, funny, well acted by all involved, and as damning of the American dream as Wolf of Wall Street was. I imagine it would have actually been good with a better director.

See, Michael Bay, we like this sort of dumb. The Rock is great here, really stretches out more than usual. Also, the wacky style fits the story.

I enjoyed this probably more than I should have. There is a lot of fun to be had in this movie, which I'm not sure how to think about after really reading in to this story. The movie characters are way more sympathetic then their movie counterparts. This movie toes the line of comedy and a more serious tale, and while I think it would have been better served to go more towards comedy, I'm not too sure if it would have worked. Also plenty of useless slo-mo that is inconsistent through the film.
