This fascinating project from a fascinating artist is absolutely worth the treatment it gets here. I would have liked for Kiefer to have had more screen time discussing his ideas, because there is a rich background for his work (the names and references he drops are from various strange and esoteric sources). It is possible that Fiennes voice is a little too obtrusive at times.

Kiefer's work is some of the most impressive, evocative and interesting of any living artist, and it lends itself to being photographed (and it was probably a mistake to get the DVD rather than the Blu-ray). The artist himself only speaks a little, and most of what he says isn't too revealing, but he does provide a couple of little clues that help to draw out the power of the work.

Not caring for the history behind Kiefer's magnificent piece of art Fiennes instead finds the emotion behind it, rendering the documentary not so much as a lecture but instead as an experience. The film also attempts to give us insight into the creative process behind this artwork (importantly never answering why it was made). Captivating, fascinating and beautiful.

"There's a storyline involving emperors, chastity belts, and metal plates, but it's slightly confusing and largely nonsensical." - Diego Costa
