Outlaw Johnny Black

This thing is just lifeless. There's no sense of style or energy and it completely fails to capture the throwback feeling that Black Dynamite nailed - it doesn't feel like a cheap old exploitation western, it feels like a cheap new straight-to-Tubi clunker. Above all, it fails to be consistently funny. Each scene drags on way too long and is packed with dead air. There are a couple of funny moments encased within, but don't expect more than a chuckle every half an hour

Too much plot and a surprising amount of church for a silly comedy, which leads to a lot of awkward dead air. But when it works, it really works.

I was so disappointed with Outlaw Johnny Black. I am a HUGE fan of Black Dynamite and this film was made by many of the same people who made that film. The film was also advertised as a comedy in the vein of Black Dynamite but it is nothing like that film. There are not that many jokes, and the ones that do show up don't land. The film spends most of its 2.5 hour runtime trying to be a drama. It's a weird take for this film to make. Skip this one especially if you are a Black Dynamite fan.

It isn't Black Dynamite good. Technically it isn't as impressive (especially in photography and editing). And while funny, the humor isn't as absurd or quotable. But Michael Jai White obviously loves Blaxploitation Westerns, and finds a way to both poke fun at them and recreate the nostalgia. I was a little unsure of the faith based message and sometimes uneven middle. But he makes up for that with a few great comedic action sequences and three very nice cameos. Recommended.
