If you've ever listened to a John Cougar Mellencamp album, then you pretty much know what's going to happen in this movie. If you've never listened to a John Cougar Mellencamp album, then watch Out of the Furnace and you're pretty much covered. If you've never heard of John Cougar Mellencamp, then get off my lawn while I listen to this little ditty about Jack and Diane.

Intensely blue and orange piece of miserablist Americana. It feels a bit self-important about it's own musings on Masculinity and Violence, but fortunately Casey Affleck and Christian Bale are at their very best here and hold the entire thing together. Still, I could have done without the fucking Pearl Jam song...

I really wanted to love this and it actually is sort of close to being great. Western PA/Northern WV panhandle stuff is right on (and feels complete) but basically the film undoes it goodwill with dumb plot contrivances. If it was just Zoe Saldana and Christian Bale cuddling and then Casey Affleck dealing with PTSD it would be amazing. It would be a different movie, but not *that* different.

Pretty unoriginal script with a particularly dumb ending. Fortunately, Bale, Affleck, Harrelson, and Dafoe are all great. What you're left with is a movie that's good enough to be entertaining, but probably not one that will stick with you for long.

I thought the acting was excellent all-around, and the plot, though straight-forward, drew my sympathy. The film seemed a little awkwardly paced, however, and the ending felt anti-climactic. Still, I was solidly interested from beginning to end.

An evocative and well-acted portrait of rural poverty and despondency that seems a bit unclear on its own message. If it's as simple as the decaying effects of vengeance on the human spirit, it seems rather a bit obvious, but the insidious effects the Iraq War has on Rodney (Casey Affleck, always great) point to a more all-encompassing criticism of violence that isn't all that deeply explored. Still, you could do a lot worse.

A late account of economic depression focused on male rivalry and survival in times of despair and boredom. Despite the good use of landscapes to set the tone -- and also Pearl Jam's Release twice --, the film looks brutal and grim, but not compelling or subtle enough to serve nor as a revenge thriller neither as a tale of masculine crisis. If you're looking for a truly great Americana violence story, watch Jeff Nichols' amazing Shotgun Stories.

It's definitely worth taking a look at, if for no other reasons, the passionate performance of Bale, the "better-than-the-character-deserved" performance by Woody, and a short-but-excellent appearance by Dafoe. These guys seriously need more work. I like that it didn't draw out the final sequence to uncomfortable lengths, promptly giving us the satisfaction of the revenge, but in some other places... I won't say the movie half-asses some sub-plots, but, it doesn't do enough with some of them.

I don't know, I guess I've seen a lot of revenge movies and this one didn't do it for me. I was never invested in the story, so it just moved from violent set piece to emotional acting to violent set piece. I wish it was as awesome as that makes it sound. Well acted, but, uh, I like The Outfit a lot more.

At its heart this is a pretty simple and basic revenge film elevated by an amazing cast and a first act that takes its time really soaking in that backwater Pennsylvanian atmosphere. As such it reminded me a lot about Shane Meadow's Dead Man's Shoes, and like that, the third act didn't really land for me, feeling a bit too run of the (steel) mill.

What you heard is probably true. Out of The Furnace is a really average thriller with easily retraced themes of revenge, vigilantism, and brotherhood. It's main selling point is its cast, which really shines on all fronts, most importantly though Affleck and Harrelson who deliver really good performances. Its a shady story, with some really good visuals and a stellar cast. Not half bad.

Aching with reality, this anguished revenge drama about factory-working brothers crippled by their brutal circumstances in a fading rust-belt town is unwaveringly frowny-faced, and it doesn't have the best title on its side, but the noteworthy cast's indomitable performances should make it palatable for more casual filmgoers, as does the film's lucidly down to earth sense of place as well as its sense of context for its more sensationalistic elements.

Great cast and some beatiful/bleak rust belt scenery, but unravels pretty quickly. There are some very very good moments in the movie (the bridge scene with Bale and Saldana is absolutely phenomenal), but as a whole it's just the same revenge flick you've seen many time over with a nice coat of paint on it. Worth seeing, but you'd expect much much better with the excellent names on the marquee.

Out Of The Furnace is one of the most unsung and underrated films of 2013. The story is simplistic, but this film is incredibly compelling and visually stunning. Bale is the backbone of the film and he gives one of his best performances to date. The supporting cast is stellar also with equally great performances from Affleck, Harrelson, Dafoe & Saldana. And the cinematography is superb. The screenplay is probably the films only downfall, but otherwise this is a solid piece of filmmaking.

Quite a good film, well filmed, well acted, yet it doesn't go any deeper than skin deep. It's relatively straightforward, where the issue lies. Actors of this caliber need something to work with, sadly the script doesn't reach the places or emotions it should have touched. Still quite a good film.

This felt like it was building to masterpiece status: first act = 80, second act = 90...then the contrived, cliched, terribly disappointing third act lands with a thud = 70. Average them out and it gets a reluctant 80. If you like this, try the similarly-toned True Detective, which truly does build to a masterful whole.

Has a very, very ... very slow build-up. In fact it takes the film an hour to get anywhere else than "what happened so far". Which implies that not much can happen afterwards in a runtime of 105 minutes.
And it doesn't, even if that little story happens in a good way.

This is not a happy movie. Set in a depressed town on the Rust Belt, it's a dark story of an Iraq war veteran and his brothers attempts to survive the madness and monotony that is their lives. It's always pleasing to see Harrelson play the part of a bat shit insane meth head and Bale does a good job as well. For how strong the rest of cast is I really expected more. The film focused too much on the build up and not enough on the hunt.

This is badass. A great, mean, unsentimental revenge flick in the late-70's ROLLING THUNDER style. Everything--the pacing, the establishing locale/setting shots, the dialogue exchanges, the imagery, the violence--has been stretched out for maximum existential impact. Everybody's faces are pinched with regret. Lots of missed/blown opportunities are discussed. Bale's implosive performance is so much better than his showy work in AMERICAN HUSTLE. Highly watchable, live-wire stuff.

Sure, it's not like it's original, but it's done quite well, and the ultimate revenge felt satisfying, due largely in part to Bale being such a good actor. Christian Bale and Casey Affleck are terrific in this tale about revenge. A dark, gutsy attempt to tell a story with a powerful message, Out of the Furnace uses striking images to help drive home the atmosphere on display. Bale especially turns in a good performance as the working man Russell Baze whose life changes after a car accident. Bale grounds his character in a shocking amount of realism and Affleck provides the films emotional center fold. A gripping drama, intense and gritty.

With the right cinematic squint, then, this pic could be said to be making allegorical statements about working class decay, and declarations about the perceived American tendency to descend into violent retribution in times of injustice. In that vein, Variety reviewer Scott Foundas even likened Out of the Furnace to "an Iraq-era bookend to The Deer Hunter." (pluggedin.com)
