It's all fine, there's nothing wrong with it except how dreadfully predictable it all is. I had a pre-conceived notion in my head of what the film would be like and it turned out to be exactly that, not a surprise in sight. Some of the interactions between Streep and Redford are a bit interesting, but for the most part everything just lays on the screen, waiting for the next ho-hum scene. There's just no soul in this movie at all, it makes me wonder why Pollack wanted to make it.

Some of the wildlife and panorama shots are stunning and the acting is very good, but it doesn't add up to much. The story is dull, underdeveloped and drawn out and the characters, well acted though they may be, aren't particularly interesting.

IMHO one of the most overrated films of all time. A real snore. Up there with The English Patient, Gandhi and Forrest Gump on my list of Oscar winning fodder. Granted, Meryl Streep is good. (But when was she ever bad? The film might be a turkey, but Streep never is.) The score is excellent, as is the cinematography. But a film like David Lean's, "Ryan's Daughter" can have excellent score and cinematography and still be a loser. Such is the case with this one. And I am a romantic.

I was worn out when it finally ended. Streep is wrongly directed and got on my nerves doing this lousy Danish (??) accent. The direction is the mainproblem anyway: the scenes are paced too hasty, the dynamics are hypermobile, there is no breathingspace to connect to the tension and that’s very unfortunate. Redfort did a solid part but couldn’t prevent the movie from being a bit silly with it’s polished nobility cliches and infatuating with ‘Africa’.

There's quite a bit to like here. It's a beautifully filmed movie that makes full use of its location. The performances, especially from Streep, are great. It very effectively gives a sense of place. Ultimately, though, I found it fairly dull. It's so, so slow, and despite good performances, I didn't really care about the characters. It might have been much better at a different length. For the right person, though, I could see it really working. Not terrible or anything, but not for me.

If a welding torch just won't do the trick, try john barry and some beautiful landscape shots. Melts right through anything.

Unbelievably dull. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford can't save this movie's absolutely glacial pace.

Streep is always top-notch, yet she's, arguably, outshone by Redford here. Whenever the two are onscreen together, the movie comes alive. The big quarrel was insightful, almost riveting, and a highlight which clearly emphasizes how the rest of the plot just doesn't even begin to measure up. A talky relationship drama with these characters (and actors) instead would probably have boosted my score up some tiers.

It may look dull, but it's not. Unusually fine period drama, with a priceless stand-up-and-cheer moment in the middle that I was not at all expecting

Pollack is a great director I love to watch his works, but the story was not absorbing for me.. I just loved Streep who runs the movie and the plane scene.

Now, aren't you glad I brought the Limoge? A chic flick, a character flick, a chic flick. A friend of mine loves this movie. The main character is a hero, she says. I think she makes bad choice, after bad choice. But then, so do I. Great cinematography.

Out of Africa is a sappy, but enjoyable, romantic drama that is nowhere near as good as most best picture winners but ultimately isn't bad either.

Totally fine. Watch it once and then proceed to forget most of it. There's one sequence in this film that will blow you away and it's the last one you'll forget before you start to wonder if you've even seen the movie. Proof that a well-made epic with decent performers still can't guarantee an impression on audiences.

Big game hunting is lame as hell, but they sidestepped that whole aspect of his character and made him this one-with-nature lion-whisperer type, and it was smoldery romantic, sad, real & beautiful. And based off of a true story.

I feel strangely about this movie. Loved the score, the cinematography and Meryl Streep's acting, but hated the story. So it kind of joins the list of movies I liked and hated at the same time. I feel this way about a lot of Oscar winners. I just hate being made to feel like shit by a movie.

Engaging if a little slowly paced romance. Africa is the leading character here with huge and impressive panoramic cinematography. Solid and believable performances. If you can get through the first 25 minutes its a good film

If you like to watch Meryl Streep performing and chasing your eyes through soaring wild landscapes - you are in for a double treat. Showcases Meryl probably at her peak performance. Some good lines.. good music score. Would have liked for it to be shorter. Not an epic or classic I guess, but still a good effort.

The romance of this movie isn't just limited to the conventional meaning of the word, as in the passion between Streep and Redford, rather the classical romanticism in regards to the setting and the feeling of it all. It's an often sad film, some may find it too cheesy, but I found it very beautiful and engaging. Streep is incredible, and while Redford may not exactly fit his character, he is likable as ever, so he works.

The only complaint i have on this movie that is it way too long. You can learn some history from this movie, but in the same time, you learn about love and true frienshipness. The scenery is such a treat to see whenever Meryl Streep or Robert Redford is in the picture. A woman who once did not have respect from the men in this movie, ends up having great respect once the movie ended! Great supurb job from Meryl Streep! One of my favorites by her!!

Expected much more from this one. I have respect for the great woman inside the story but I seem to miss why this film is so unbelievably good.. The scenes, costumes, people and the acting is all marvelous but the story didn't really appeal to me. Too long and what about variation?

I've liked this movie. The actors are great and Finch Hatton is a very interesting character. He made me think about the question of freedom and how it relates to culture in general. Some of his dialogues with Karen are memorable.
