Life in small town Wisconsin. Selma and Arnold, aged 7 and 5, pal around together between their two farms. Selma has a newborn calf that her father gave to her which she named 'Elizabeth'. Nels is the editor of the Fuller Junction Spectator and the kids just call him 'editor'. Viola is the new school teacher from the big city. While Nels wants to marry Viola, Viola does not want to live in a small quiet, nothing happening town. The biggest news is that Faraassen has built a new barn. (imdb)

Was life ever really as innocent and wholesome as this? I doubt it. Agnes Moorehead is almost unrecognizable as the salt-of-the-earth, loving wife...until she tries to look beatific, and ends up looking arch instead. And "little black cloud" Butch Jenkins keeps saying "shucks" so petulantly it might as well be "fuck". Set your cute-tolerance level on 'high'. It's a tribute to the (relative) taste and intelligence of most involved that I did not, in fact, want to retch while watching this.

Always pleasant, although O'Brien's sweetness borders on grating. Good, gentle work by Robinson while Moorehead is touching if underused. The most entertaining vignettes come in the last half hour or so - the tin bath adventure, the burning barn.

Pleasant family drama, with a great performance by Robinson and child star O'Brien.

Sentimental story of Norwegian farmers settled in the US. As a Norwegian myself, that got me extra invested. It's a very personal and narrow story. As in, not a major society changing tale, but just basic life challenges a Nor-Am family has to deal with within their small community. Edward G. Robinson was the draw, but it was really the kids that mead this as pleasant as it was. A truly great one for 8-year-old Margaret O'Brien and her little sidekick, dopey-eyed Jackie 'Butch' Jenkins.
