A lot of the gags are amazing, as are many of the stunts (Keaton pulling out 20 guns from under his poncho comes to mind, as does his waterfall swinging). It's pretty enjoyable, even if it doesn't have as much humor, resolution, or excitement as some of his other films.

Lacks the energy, momentum and perfect comic timing of Keaton's masterpieces such as The General and Sherlock Jr. It does, however, have a charm about it that keeps it interesting even when things are moving a little bit slowly.

Keaton's city slicker is conducted on an elastic, cartoony railroad line into D.W. Griffith's native territory and into a Hatfield-McCoy feud. The 19th-century rural setting seems to bring out Keaton's keenest eye; the comedy stunts performed by the director-star look so risky as to elicit more worry than laughter.

There are some great moments, but a lot of it falls flat. Even some gags that should have had me laughing didn't get a reaction because of the awkward pacing. Enjoyable, but doesn't compare with Keaton's greats.

Its opening scenes are devoid of comedy and drag on far longer than they need to, but eventually it picks up some thirty minutes in. While it's lighter on jokes than other Keaton comedies, much of the stunt work towards the end, notably at the waterfall, is truly remarkable.

Keaton substitutes his usually brilliant physical comedy for a comedy of manners, as the driving force of the film is the tension between Southern decorum and an old blood feud that demands Keaton get wasted. It's not among his funniest work, but it is entertaining and as expertly made as you'd expect.

A fantastic film that goes just like a steam engine, begins slow and over time increases it's pace. In this case it works perfectly, it's got some amazing stunts and wonderful gags that are sure to entertain and amaze. I've always loved Keaton, and i'm pretty sure that when I have children and grandchildren I'll make every one of his films a must watch.

It's pretty slow moving for a slapstick comedy, especially at the beginning. There are good gags scattered throughout, and the stuntwork at the climax is amazing. Overall, not one of Keaton's best, but like most of his work it's entertaining enough.

The train ride that Buster takes mid-film is AN ALL-TIME CLASSIC !! Just brilliant. A bit of the other stuff can drag , but really ... cinematic magic through and through !

The outlandish premise at times outweighs the suspension of disbelief, making this feel more like a live-action cartoon and less a romantic thriller. Still, Keaton's physical prowess is astounding, and the train shots in particular convey a kineticism unusual to the era.

Keaton's second feature-length directorial is quite the epic. You get the handful of wonderful gags (the not being able to leave the house is great) but you also get an impressive Hatfield-McCoy saga. The final waterfall set-piece is thrilling.

It's a little slower than his shorts (which have frantic energy), but it's still a good collection of gags and stunts within a decent storyline. (Fav scene: the one-eyed prayer, although "Tarzan at the waterfall" was the most amazing.)

Nice little silent film from Keaton. I didn't find it as funny as some of Keaton's others, but it has a good heart, has a few good moments, and at under 80 minutes doesn't wear out its welcome. Fun fact: the infant who plays the 1 year old McKay was Buster Keaton Jr.

Viewed February 10, 2022. Buster Keaton’s comedic take on the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys, with Buster as the hapless hero who falls in love with a member of the rival clan. Every good Buster Keaton movie has a stunt or gag so unbelievable that you can’t quite fathom how they pulled it off. In this, it’s a shot of Keaton catching Natalie Talmadge as she sails off the edge of a waterfall.

As is the norm for Keaton the stunt work was very impressive. The comedy gags were a bit lackluster however but the story was still fun and I thought that the romance was sweet.

More plot-driven and less comedy-driven than some of Keaton's other works, meaning it has less of the chaotic energy that often defines his films. But once we he gets to show off stunt work at the end, Keaton does not disappoint. And it ends on probably the best gag of them all.

That Keaton's rivals because of their Southern hospitality can't kill him while under their roof leads to some amusing moment. The movie really takes of in the final chase, which includes a still breathtaking rescue from a waterfall. I also learned that the first passenger trains were just stagecoaches with a locomotive in front of them. This part has also some inventive gags, but goes on a bit too long.

Keaton's feature-length period begins in earnest with a major shift in tone, with an idyllically pretty look and leisurely pacing. I don't know if it quite plays to his greatest strengths, but it is very enjoyable.

fun. keaton always manages to produce films with very high production qualities and rather impressive stunts. this one wasn't as full of gags as some of his others, but it's still a moderately good time, if nothing else.

The daring physical stunts Keaton performs in the film aren't really the parts of a Keaton movie I enjoy most. I much rather enjoy seeing Keaton find his way through struggles the world puts in his path to get the girl of his dreams; there's something about that type of story that gets me everytime.

Keaton, ever the ingenious craftsman, uses a clever scenario not just for funny gags and unbelievable stunts, but also to create a well-realized period piece. Featuring wide open exterior spaces, antique costume and set designs, and dwelling at some length on primitive train engineering, this is a wonderful precursor to The General.

This is why slapstick comedies (silent ones, at that) should not be much longer than 45 minutes...A paper-thin narrative cannot sustain this film 75 minutes in length, especially problematic when slapstick is oriented on the body and the spectacle, and because of poor pacing, the body and the spectacle is spread out far too thin. Some fantastic stunts--the waterfall finale in particular--save it from being too awful.

The first half of Our Hospitality a little plodding (the train sequence, while charming in its own right, goes on forever), but the finale, starting with the cliff-face chase, is so packed with amazing stunts and gags that it makes up for any earlier boredom. Also, Keaton in drag. Huzzah!

Fabulous comedy, one of Keaton's best films. Richly packed with humor, not just gags, but real human observation; beautifully conceived, beautifully performed, and beautifully photographed. The acrobatic climax still elicits gasps from any audience. It is generally conceded that although he eschewed screen credit, Keaton actually directed most of his films.
