Molly Shannon and Meth Damon knock it out of the park, John Early and his little brother in the film are hilArious, the mention of birch trees reminded me of Nikolai Astrup's painting Midsommar Eve Bonfire that - in its own way - is a celebration of life akin to this film, but this made me wish i saw Other Movies

So, maybe not the best holiday film. However, I can't say enough about Jesse Plemons. He's wonderful. Cast him in more things. I want him to appear in everything! Molly Shannon is also great.

Molly Shannon is devastating in this fresh, funny, deeply sad and moving family comedy-drama. Great work by Plemons, Whitford, Woods; hilarious turns by John Early and his kid brother. It treads familiar ground at times but does so with wit, grace and compassion. Impressive.

The opening party sequence is about as relatable a film could be especially if you have made any attempts to do anything creative with your time. "Give these to Lorne Michaels".

This is a great movie with some underrated performances. Plemons, Shannon, and Whitford are fantastic. The characters all seem fully realized. For me there are two things that hold this movie back. One is that this is a deeply personal film, and I personally didn't relate to the screenplay the way I felt I was supposed to. The other being just the insane amount of recognizable actors they got for minor roles. They seemed to be popping up left and right and it got a little distracting.

Combines comedy and drama in an exquisite manner. Everything is complicated and bittersweet. Great writing which of course is no surprise. Delectable characters sublimely acted. An all around hit.

This film feels very inherently personal and therefore has a very unique point-of-view. There's both lightness and tragedy. Notes of humor as well as notes of realism. All of the performances are quite good, but there was one scene in particular in which Jesse Plemons' character is consumed by anxiety while running errands. Plemons just knocks it out of the park in that scene.

Moving, but honest in ways most people don't want to see, Kelly deserves a lot of credit for putting together a film about cancer (Shannon's unexpectedly fantastic) that doesn't just capture the darkness (even when it's lurking on the periphery), but is plenty funny as well. The cancer scenes are also filled w/ details rarely shown in other films & you always get the sense you're watching a doc of Kelly's real-life tragedy (w/ good times as well as bad times) play out before you.

I tend to really like movies that realistically find beauty in sadness, remorse, grief, or any other negative emotion and this is a shining example of that type of movie. It's shot and written in a simple and realistic way that let the actors fully realize the characters. Jesse Plemons is great and Bradley Whitford will go unsung in an unsung movie but put in wonderful work, the real shame is that Molly Shannon had maybe the best performance of last year and no one seemed to be talking about it.

It nails too many uncomfortable details to begrudge its rather banal blend of comedy and drama (the tonal hazards of which Kelly eschwes though!) and sitcomy direction. Everyone in the cast is good, but Plemons is fantastic.

It doesn't all work but Shannon is very good and Plemons continues to impress. I noticed him first on Friday Night Lights, he always seemed to come off as genuine. Breaking Bad and Fargo season two were darker turns. Here he is honest and silly, emotional and hurt. Nice work.

Other People contains some genuinely great moments peppered into a fairly familiar story. Molly Shannon is gradually showing that she has some real acting chops and it seems like quite a long time ago that she had her hands in her armpits. The real pleasure here is Plemons. He is finally given a role where he isn't a creepy kid and he shines. His sheepish grins and shy persona give to a very real and grounded performance. There is sure to be more great things coming from him.

Viewed December 8, 2016. An extremely personal movie, and it works because Chris Kelly is really wearing his heart on his sleeve here I especially liked the way the narrative is driven by a "New York City boy" returning home, because it provides plenty of great details - eating dinner at the hometown Applebee's, the inescapability of "Drops of Jupiter" - while also using the suburban setting as an interesting contrast to all of the awful things that are happening. Molly Shannon is great.

Molly Shannon stuns and some of the observations about loss are funny and insightful, but occasionally the film confuses snark with edginess and it stumbles.
