Dreary enough to prompt me to remove the novel from my ‘want to read' list on Goodreads… I have no desire to spend any more time with these characters. Sturdy work by Fiennes and a nice score, but a turgid film that feels longer than it is, and it's quite long.

This is a good period drama. Its a film about gambling and faith. The performances are good and its a perfectly pleasant watch. Not much to say about it as such. Both Cate Blanchett and Ralph Fiennes give decent performances I suppose. Its upper middle class based and may be a little slow moving for some perhaps but it has some mildly interesting dialogue and its an enjoyable enough watch, so I thought it was ok, even if it is a little twee. Yes, I'd recommend it.

It was only during the last 15 minutes I vividly remembered having seen the film years prior. Which unfortunately illustrates perfectly how effective and intriguing the first 90% of the film is. I was most vested in Hinds’ character and to my disappointment he was brushed aside after the midpoint. Can’t really come up with an excuse to recommend this to even period piece aficionados.

Good art film. A somehow polite yet effective movie about obsession
