Despite its lowly reputation, Landis' take on 30's style farce worked, injecting this cartoon like 'comic opera' with a genuinely rhythmic sense of movement. While Stallone doesn't have a gift for comedy, he is much better than he is given credit for, and even when he fumbles, which isn't often, it isn't distracting because he is surrounded by a very talented supporting cast that generally understand how to play the material. The chemistry between the actors makes it a pleasure to watch.

A very fun and lighthearted little comedy. Stallone actually does his part, but Chazz Palminteri is really spot on. And you have to see Marisa Tomei do the Shirley Temple wink, and Kurtwood Smith ("Red" from 70's Show) punching a pigeon had me laughing pretty hard.

No doubt it’s true that the filmmakers were aiming to evoke Hollywood screwball comedies, but in many ways this is more like a drawing room play, and attempting to film a century-old style of script with a half-century-old style of moviemaking has quite a bit to do with why this never gets off the ground. Stallone tries his best, running up and down stairs like a champ, but none of the performers can really be said to hit the mark. There are a couple of chuckles, but precious little charm.

It's not fantastic, but I still think it's a vastly underrated comedy. I guess people just don't like Stallone in a comedic role?

Good, clean fun. I imagine the stage production it's based on is perfect.

A often overlooked 'opera' without the singing which is very funny and skilled.

One of the shittiest movies ever made. I hated it and my wife hated it. The great tragedy was that we didn't share our hatred of the movie before it was over.

When this type of humor isn't done right, it really hurts to watch. Landis clearly put a lot of work into getting a fun cast and good production design, but the humor just doesn't work very well most of the time. Peter Riegert, Chazz Palminteri, and Tim Curry are easily the bright spots, and they really pull it off. But the film suffers because no one else has the same authenticity that they do. There are a few laughs....

Yet another datapoint that Sylvester Stallone is only capable of making unintentional comedies.

Leaden attempt at a screwball comedy, and one that sinks under its own witlessness.

This is a completely overlooked classic, in the vein of a quick-dialogue 1930's farcical comedy. I love this movie, and gladly watch it whenever it shows on cable. This is the one and only Sylvester Stallone comedy that holds up.

Ok, so sue me, I liked this movie. Sly does a good job with this comedy. But, I'm afraid that it's Marisa Tomei that steals this film (ha ha that's a pun - he's a mobster, and I said she stole the... movie.. ok it wasn't funny) Really, it's actually worth seeing, despite some of the things I've said about Stallone in the past.

Given the people attached to this film, I expected more. Oscar is a film that simply belongs playing in the background in someone's apartment on a Sunday afternoon on a local station known for having syndicated 90's comedies on most nights of the week.

Funny script, good timing, and the cast really pulls it up a notch from where it would be otherwise.
