Overall it was more of a lemon than an orange (ha ha ha). Anyway the movie itself was pretty much blah. I didn't expect much and didn't get much out of it. And who stole the show... none other then Catherine O'Hara (you remember her from Home Alone right?). She was actually funny and made me stay awake and actually laugh in certain spots (especially when they meet the Stanford people). Sometimes I like Jack Black roles, but this was not one of those times.

Really solid cast, and better than it had any right to be. This and "Saving Silverman" are definitely my two biggest "dumb comedy" guilty pleasures. I think you can chalk my liking this one up to a pretty great cast (Black, O'Hara, Lithgow, Ramis, Tomlin). There's something about Mike White's writing that elevates the material, too.

Something that I could watch over and over again (and have...thanks to TBS). It hits at the psyche of the collegebound writer quite well. And it's damn funny.

This would have made a very serviceable middle of the road Indie movie, but in 2002 I just don't think they knew how to handle it. On one hand they try to play it for very broad laughs, which it halfway succeeds in doing thanks to Jack Black. On the other hand the main thrust had potential as a coming-of-age story, but felt watered down. Ultimately its the quality of the cast that raises its overall quality enough to make it perfectly harmless and therefore watchable.

Lightweight coming of age fare but with a few inspired gags and a likable cast which lets you ignore how by the numbers parts of it are.The soundtrack is pure 2002 though, as is the rest of it.

Jack Black is the only thing really worth watching here, but he doesn't save it from mediocrity. The main character is pretty unsympathetic, so the main redeeming factors are a small handful of funny scenes.

Mistakes - 1) In the scene where it shows the April calendar, right at the beginning, it shows 31 days in April. There are only 30 days in April. 2) The film is set in April, yet when Sean arrives at Stanford the red and yellow foliage on the trees indicates that those scenes were shot in the autumn. 3) At the end when Shaun says, "I'm goin' surfing," when the shot shows the ocean as he runs towards it, there are no waves to surf on.
