Oh, yeah yeah, better than remake. My reasoning: Penelope is topless here. Is that really a decisive factor in movies? Yesssssss!

It's a shame I saw Vanilla Sky first, becaus it does reveal a lot. But in many ways this is the better version of the two. ... Penélope's and Chete Lera's character get the attention they needed and the character development of César is more believable. Too bad that this film only gets criticked in comparison to Vanilla Sky. I would have had a better view on it without the image of Cruise's grin in the back of my mind.

Much better than the American remake, Vanilla Sky, this movie focuses less on Tom Cruise's ego and Cameron Crowe's record collection and more on the story and characters.

Don't let the American version (that piece of garbage titled Vanilla Sky) stop you from seeing this Spanish original. Two totally different movies. This one being 5 million times better.

Starts off a bit slowly, and although it's done to set up the characters it's a bit longer than it needs to be. After that the film is great and feels like a puzzle being put together before your eyes. While the ending may be a little direct in explaining what has happened, it works because by that point the important thing is to think about why it happened.

It's refreshing to have an intelligent science-fiction film rather than just spaceships running dogfights. This one, though, focused a little more on the characters, which led to some emotional depth (but often seemed draggy). It's almost funny trying to pick out all the influences, yet it seems to say something new. (I was also wondering throughout if Cruz's perpetual "chilled" look was a subtle hint to the ending.)

It’s been too long since VANILLA SKY for me to make any meaningful comparisons, but this certainly feels more raw and propulsive than its (ahem) Vanilla remake, with Noriega unafraid to make his haunted lead unlikable, even detestable at times, and Cruz perfect as an elusive object of desire. Not sure there is any deeper meaning here than seeing a vain egotist get what’s coming to him, and this means that the film (and characters) lack a genuine resonance.

Thought it was just a romantic drama, but turned out to be kind of a mindfuck. Not really as much twisting a plot once you start to notice some things and can guess what has happened, but still a pretty solid thing to keep you guessing about the details. Penélope Cruz is an amazing actress, but I think she shines in her nativue language and didn't get as great roles for English-speaking roles.

The concept is inventive and makes for an interesting watch that keeps you guessing. The film does get a little melodramatic at times, but for what it is, the film works as an emotionally involving thriller.

What was it about the 90s - the goddamn NINETIES - that made people determined to make movies about people running to alternate realities? ALO is punkier, nastier than its US remake, obviously low budget with far less likable characters, but that also makes the arc sharper, the stakes higher. In the end I kind of wish it left a few things vaguer than it does, but that final zoom over the edge is worth the ride.

For me Abre los ojos/Vanilla Sky work well enough as companion films - riffing on the same material, with different verve and delivery, but ultimately tied together by Cruz's sensitive performances.

A kooky psychological horror disguised as a surreal fantasy disguised as a romantic drama. And it does a remarkable job of balancing all of those genres & tones without ever seeming too jarring when it shifts backs & forth between them. The script is super clever & clues you in without giving the whole shebang away, & even though I didn't understand what was going on for a solid chunk of the runtime I was still entertained by the ride. Eduardo Noriega is fabulous here. The mask is hella creepy.

I love Vanilla Sky and I love Open Your Eyes. The only real question I have in my mind is whether Penélope Cruz is more alluring when acting in English or her native Spanish. The latter methinks.

Yes, I know - The movie is highly rated everywhere and people have sung praises about it. I shall honestly admit that I didn't really "get" the movie and hence I did not enjoy it all. Yes - The movie made me guess all the time but it was no fun. I had to read the IMDB discussion boards to make sense of what I saw.

A guessing game that asks some legitimate questions about our relationship with reality but fails to offer any insight and mostly comes off as an exercise in plotting. Some good moments and it's definitely better than Vanilla Sky, but I thought it was kind of a drag, personally.

Perhaps I'd rate this even higher if I hadn't seen Vanilla Sky first. The performance of P. Cruz is better here and the main protagonist is certainly more sympathetic than T. Cruise. On the other hand, I enjoyed Cameron Diaz and Jason Lee's portrayals of their respective characters better in VS. Though there's still too much exposition in the end here, VS feels overlong by comparison (_getting_ to this, however, felt rushed). I prefer Crowe's soundtrack, but the trip-hop here has its charm.

Despite being in Spanish and having badly presented subtitles, I found this movie to be everything Vanilla Sky wished it could be. Obviously this is the original story, and was much better then the confusing English Vanilla Sky remake of it. The movie really heats up about 3/4 into it, and aside from some questions about what exactly is going on, is riveting to the end. I really wish I had seen this version first, since the story was just a little too familiar to me.

Made three years before Memento, which is considered to be revolutionary, because it used flashbacks to create confusion with spectator and make them to turn on brain to be able to follow the story. It was in fact first that has used flashbacks in this way, which was refreshing. Also, it has great story, brought to us trough great group of actors. It is masterfully directed by Amenbar.Don`t compare it to Vanilla sky, because week acting and changed script ruined perfectly good story.

This film is the one that Vanilla Sky is trying to copy, and it almost goes without saying that it's much better.
