Open Hearts

Even with the occasional visual filters present here, the style really captures an immediacy and humanity that works excellently with this subject matter. It's a story that could easily have me picking sides and judging, but here everything comes off as so organic and human that you just feel sad or happy for what the various characters are going through. The four leads are excellent, and the teenage daughter matches them well in the few scenes she has.

"You didn't think this through!" Mikkelsen's character snaps at Richter's. After all that's happened, he still wants to believe that life is about informed choices, that you can see all the consequences that arise in advance and be consistent.Richter's character, meanwhile, is desperately clinging to anything that drifts by ever since her life was ruined by a freak accident that doesn't even offer any closure. No heroes, no villains, just life in all its unfair messiness.

Open Hearts offers you an intense intimacy with its characters, and fleeting moments of Super 8 footage showing the deep desires of the main character brought to the screen particularly furthered how much of an emotional wreck the film made me. As far as the characters are concerned it is an emotional minefield with no escape, with the film's look at love, loss and adultery seeming almost unbearably honest. Sadness born out of happiness born out of sadness.

Another great Dogma 95 movie, this movie feels so real. It's an incredible drama. Great story, acting and filming style.

Somehow the honesty of the characters navigates us through this minefield of a scenario. Great cast, although I found the Dogme style distracting, even though it probably created the conditions for such intimate and honest performances.

Probably Biers best film. Here she somehow keeps it simple, and lets the movie develop by itself. I think the acting is very pure and the dogme-style suits her fetish for love and its deconstruction of family idyl. It doesn't catch me as other love stories, but it's very pure and honest.

.... I still got a crush on Sonja Richter because of this (and still, Bier's best by far)

Unfortunate accident changed the life of few people who are under surveillance throughout whole movie. This would have been great base for any drama. Those personal problems are well pictured here. Probably i don't like danish Dogme-type minimlistic movies or i am getting tired of them.

Crushed after this one. Hard to blame the domino effect led on by our emotions. The guilt of love and it's unpredictable roots, when devotion seems timeless...life is complex. A narrative that pairs well with it's dogme format, giving a sincere look at human nature and it's frailty.

Very good story and direction. Mads' performance is top class.

First movie I have seen from Susanne Bier. And again including my favourite actors, Nikolaj and Mads.
