Buster and Sybil exit a chapel as newlyweds. Among the gifts is a portable house you easily put together in one week. It doesn't help that Buster's rival for Sybil switches the numbers on the crates containing the house parts. (imdb)

an outstanding feat of special effects, especially considering the time, and exceptional work on buster's part in the areas of directing, stunts, and comedy. no doubt this movie, it's being silent aside, has stood the test of time.

Neither the funniest Keaton short nor the one with the most impressive stunt work ('Sherlock Jr.' clearly deserves those praises), but a nice little story with some great gags.

one thing keaton had in common with chaplin was an obsession with the concept of Home, an elusive place of order, acceptance and sanctuary which the world simply won't cater for. the incredibly sweet, sincere romance in the foreground becomes tragically idealistic when framed against these increasingly abstract images of the house perpetually on the verge of collapse. if only life came with a set of instructions.

Buster Keaton and his new bride labor to build a house from a kit. There's not much of a narrative arc to speak of, but the premise allows for some pretty funny physical gags. And inventive ones, too, such as when the entire cockeyed structure is rotating around on a giant lazy susan. Keaton is endearing and charming as ever, and although we don't get to see Sybil Seely do that much, she certainly is a cutie-pie. The ending makes a terrific capper to this fun little short with plenty of laughs.

Buster Keaton's funhouse. Funny and creative concept executed marvelously. Feels, in some ways, like a warmup for the extended setpiece at the end of Steamboat Bill Jr. (in particular, the falling wall gag comes to mind).

Pretty funny and clever. The first stunt with the car was really impressive. It also could be viewed as the best or worst house ever depending on how you look at it. Woman in bath tub was a really nice bit but I think they may have failed to cover up the goods, someone confirm.

A great short; very funny and technically innovative, with lots of gags that'll make you say "wow." It is also a nice little romance in which love overcomes all adversity.

Well, I willingly watched a third one. Probably means I do enjoy it, although I still don’t think it’s great art. This is one of Keatonʼs earlier short films that are less grounded in real life and even more cartoonish than the later, longer ones. Obvious piece of advice if you’re struggling with these old comedies: watch them with other people (and discover an advantage of silent films: you can talk over them as much as you want).

This Keaton short is one of his best. Sometimes in his feature length works some of the plot feels like filler to get to the sight gags and stunts, but this being a short (at 25 minutes) really cuts that down, and there is a lot of great stuff fit into that time frame. Some of the sight gags are great (the hand over the camera and the bottom half of the car taking off) and Keaton is, as usual, a total madman risking his life and well-being with stunts over and over for our entertainment. Great.

Who knew prefab houses were a thing in 1920? I'm always impressed with the stunts -- how did they not lose time filming due to injury?

Fantastic, and quite the contrast with another early marriage-themed Keaton short, My Family Relations. Where that one is mean-spirited at its core, this one sees Keaton and his new bride devoted to one another in the face of challenges. The house is a great gag throughout, and Keaton finds evermore creative ways to utilize it.

Buster Keaton may lack Chaplin's artistry, and his films may not be as deep or allegorical as Chaplin's films, but he makes it up with his spectacular stunts that can stand the test of time. Here, he is dressed like Chaplin and acting like Chaplin, yet his film lacks the emotional impact often present in Chaplin's cinema. But after all, this is a short film, so it wouldn't be fair to set the expectation too high.

Everything goes wrong in Buster's house as he and his wife are just trying to get their life on track. Hits a little too close to home right now! My house hasn't started spinning on its foundation, but this is 2020 so I haven't written off the possibility.

It's pretty hard to get me on silent comedy I've found, but that doesn't mean that there aren't some silly spots that brought a smile to my face. Ultimately though, what I appreciated most here was the large stunts and the cleverness of them. I adore the ending where they think the train has passed them and one comes back around and destroys the house. Also the car scene early on which everybody mentions. Just didn't quite connect with me like it obviously did some others, but it's still great.

Keaton wanted to open his solo career with some of his best material, and did he ever. The set-pieces and stunts in this are just wild, way past anything he did in his days with Arbuckle--way past anything just about anyone had ever done anywhere, really. Funny, charming, and surprising from beginning to end.

Buster Keaton movies always make me smile, they charm the hell out of me without fail. This one has all his good stuff - the romantic plot, the pratfalls, the dangerous & inventive stunts, hitting a cop (played by Charlie Chaplin) over the head with his own truncheon... what more could you want from a Keaton?
