Despite its flaws (mainly its dull and messy first act), it had an odd appeal. The second and third acts culminate into a surprisingly incredible and dark, nihilistic ending.

A mixed work, showing a complex incident during the few days before Christmas in Mongkok, Hong Kong involving a wannabe assassin from the countryside, a group of cops, a woman working as a prostitute and many others after a street quarrel leads to the death of a Triad boss' son. There are moments of inspiration where it feels like a great film, but it has moments which are pointless and cliché. The result is that it is a disappointment despite its virtues.

Very tough film. Even though there are some details I disliked, like very predictable middle act and not very convincing cast of model-looking Daniel Wu as a country bumpkin. But the brutal last act makes up for those mistakes. Seems Johnnie To isn't the only one in Hong Kong capable of making fresh and interesting crime dramas.
