First one to rank this, well, pressure on me, then. First of all, it's a great adaptation. Adapting a book with such a loose narrative is always difficult. Yes, it's the same film as Motorcycle Diaries, but the fundament, the characters, are constructed in more profond way. The film also managed to capture that same travel euphoria which is the essence of the book. I don't know if another film has managed to capture this, that well. Garrett Hedlund is Dean Moriarty as I imagined him.

The Mortensen & Adams bit was great. Salles brings considerable stylistic flair, and the film is well-paced. As far as I can remember, his adaptation is rather faithful in terms of plot points but he might've done a better job of communicating the appeal of being on all these road trips and tried to go further into the themes of rebellion/liberation. A mixed bag, with limited weight to it, then. Check it out if you've read the book (if not, I recommend that you do - go with The Original Scroll).

I'm not familiar with the beatnik movement at all so this movie doesn't really resonate with me. I like road trip movies and this had a lot of that, but it was really more of a time jump film which adds to the nature of passing characters never to be seen again. I've no doubt the book is a lot better. Stewart is eye-catching and I grow more enamored with her acting ability and natural charm. Fav scene: being kicked out of the house, saying bye to his daughter, and the wife correctly chiding him.

If the movie isn't quite as energetic as the source material, nor Sam Riley quite charismatic enough to be a convincing Kerouac, this is still a fine adaptation of a famously un-adaptable book. Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund in particular are electric whenever they're on screen.

Lacks Kerouac's freewheeling beat poetry. Completely forgettable. Unlike the original book.

A chaotic and directionless piece which succeeds in capturing some content from its source material but not much of the verve. On The Road is probably one of the hardest novels to adapt, and Walter Salles might have done better inventing his own creative detour instead of trying to tap into the mind of an eccentric writer. All the performances are fittingly middle-of-the-road and a lot of scenes feel like clichés, when they're intended to be mind-shattering new experiences. Polished but floppy.

I didn't mind the book, but I wasn't really a fan of it either. Sorta same thing with this, only it seems you spend more of your life watching this than you do reading the book. It gets very tedious at times. But Kristen Stewart shows her boobies in it.

Dull and unappealing. There's no spirit in this Salles' picture, and there ain't no journey neither. All caracters are bland and vein, not a single one being truly memorable, maybe except Ginsberg's persona, and Marylou, beautifully portrayed by a rising-talent Kristen Stewart. The biggest flop of the year.

Salles' seems incredibly in love with these characters, framing them so closely that you can actually smell them, feel their bodies, hear their whispers and screams of pleasure. Eventually, is also drags, trying to be as free and feverish as the source material, in a sequence of fragmented vignettes of self-discovery that leads to a poorly written climax.

I never liked Kerouac until I re-read the book and figured out what he was saying. The moviemakers here figured it out too. That's rare.

I like the cast, I guess I'm really don't care for the story.
To be honest, maybe this is not that fair, as it just seems all cliché to me, but who knows? Maybe that book started that cliché, in which case it's a shame I dislike it so much..

Oh boy, i hoped this would not suck...I mean, given the amazing story, based on such a great novel(which maybe sets the bar a bit too high), given the amazing cast (not the leads, but still), given the great photography -- it needs to deliver! However, this film disappoints so much. Firstly, because it tries to impose gravity and meaning to the story. Secondly it brings nothing new to the book's depiction, no interpretation, no processing, it's a mere summary. Lastly, it tries to be "artistic".

A well-enough put together film, and indeed a reverent one. In fact, it seems like something of an "inside film," wherein you have to be in the know regarding its source material (of which I only partially am, having put the book down halfway through) to get anything out of it.

A postscript: Ordinarily, gritty, explicit independent fare like On the Road doesn't gain much traction at the mainstream, mall-based box office. This film, however, stars Kristen Stewart as Marylou, which may lure a generation of Twilight fans to see what their beloved Bella is up to in her latest role. Hopefully this review's notations of exactly what she is up to will help families navigate that. (pluggedin.com)

I may review this again if I ever read the stories this is based on... otherwise this movie was a real drag. Even though this movie isn't incredibly long (about 2 hours) it feels like it is a five hour film. I had to stop and check the time twice. All the same stuff you expect in a movie about a writer. Sex, booze, drugs and idiocy... all in the name of getting new experiences to write about. It's called imagination, work on it. I can't believe I'm saying this but K. Stu. was the best in this.

Good to me, cause i read the book, and loved it too much, it's kinda Holy Book of mine. but the main reason for low ranks of this movie is the film doesn't mean too many things for those who did not read the book. and i think directors perspective caused this mainly.

Free-wheeling, vivid, pure of heart and sexual of soul. The cast are convincingly wild and free, performing openly (and repetitively) to a backdrop of beatnik sounds and sandy sunscapes. Must rate as one of 2012's overlooked gems.

Meh. I can't precisely tell what part of the movie didn't cut it, because the setting is okay, acting's fine, so I guess the story's just too lengthy, stretched and messy for all to make a great movie. I don't recommend it unless you're a big fan of the book. Which, to be truthful, might be the only target audience for this movie.

In which characters with momentum take in and run over everything in their path, usually females. These jerks. These glorious fucking jerks. Just keep going. Could've used another half hour to linger on the real key moments. But who am I to complain? Great job Mr. Salles.

I've heard reviews like "too many sex scenes" and "boring and nothing like a book" or "to indie-like". I don't know what you people are used to be watching, but this is a typical hollywoodic remake of the book. thanks to you all I expected less than I've got here. Riley's voice matched narration that I had in my head when I've read this. If the book hit the soft spot in your days, don't be naive that the movie will hit the same spot the second time.

It doesn't nearly capture the spirit and feeling of the book. The relationship between Paradise and Moriaty isn't nearly as deep and seems pretty superficial here, which kinda ruins the whole point of the story. Too long, really boring in some places and overall it just works way better as litterature. Viggo Mortensen as Burroughs was pretty awesome though.

Disclaimer; On the Road is my favorite book. However, I always try and put the source material to the furthest corner of my mind when I see the films of the things I like. I'm definitely going to rewatch this a few times to fully grasp how I feel about it. At this stage, I really enjoyed it and find Salles was absolutely a fantastic choice to direct. Whole cast does their characters justice which is highly impressive. A film with a lot of ambition and huge scope but just explodes with energy.

I haven't read the book. But even if I do so, I think it will own this movie in so many ways. This is the first time I left the movie before it ended. I managed to stay alive in there for about half of the movie, but I was thinking about it after first 30minutes of the movie. So bad.

Generally, books written by writers' writers are best left as books; They do not fare well in film. Such is the case also with On the Road. The perceived length of this film is not made clear by its given running time. I swear, this film is 5 hours long, only exacerbated by the fact that it seems to repeat itself a million times over. Great cast, and some bits (like everything with Mortensen) are great, but it was honestly hard to give a shit about this film as a whole. My god does it drag on.
