Young Pud is orphaned and left in the care of his aged grandparents. The boy and his old grandfather become inseparable friends. But Gramps is concerned for his grandson's future and wary of a scheming relative who seeks Pud's custody. One day Mr. Brink, an agent of Death arrives to take Gramps "to the land where the woodbine twineth." Through a bit of trickery, Gramps confines Mr. Brink and thus Death to the top of an old apple tree, giving Gramps extra time to resolve issues about Pud's future (imdb)

Generally likeable but somewhat slow with a very fun performance from Barrymore and an entertaining premise. Suffers somewhat from annoying kid actor issues, though less than others of the period. One aspect of the ending is totally predictable but another is legitimately shocking as it seemed like they were setting something else up for the whole movie. It made me wonder if the director changed his mind at the last minute or the studio wanted something else or something.

The charming relationship between a boy and his grandfather wears out its welcome as the film slowly runs out of things to say.

Enjoyable and blessed with a delightful cast of star character actors. Malyon is fun as the Wicked Witch of the West-esque Aunt. Possibly the most depressing of Hollywood ‘feel good' movies, however, and the kid can be grating.

This is such a wonderful film! Quirky and childlike, yet with so much soul. The whole set-up is so simple and charming, even a little supernatural. Touches a nerve. Lionel Barrymore rules his back-lot! Eily Malyon is the perfectly wretched aunt. An impressive performance from 8 year old Bobs Watson as well. On Borrowed Time (1939) is a surprisingly somber story, very unlike what Hollywood usually produces. MGM saw it as prestige literature and in my view did a eminent job.

Interesting and somewhat strange film about death and the bond between a boy and his grandfather. The story leaves something to be desired but great performances all around. Recommend *not* reading the summary, which is full of spoilers.
