Older Brother, Younger Sister

Uveven, episodic but all is forgiven with those epic final frames. IMO better titled as Older Sister Younger Sister (tho Brother has his impactful parts to play as well) this is an understated paean to Women in Family. Watch, it's deeper than you realise.

An elegantly handled and moving tragedy with all the main characters being well crafted. The film doesn't quite give me as much of a look into the sibling's bonds with one another as is needed for its final cadence to hit home fully, and it is never exceptional, but it is always completely engaging and mostly faultless.

Maratona em honra de Machiko Kyō (1924 — 2019) filme #9. Naruse. A mulher inserida dentro de um patriarcado torpe, covarde e cruel é um tema muito caro ao Mizoguchi se a narrativa acompanhasse estritamente a saga da irmã do meio, mas como é Naruse vemos tudo isso do ponto de vista da estruturação familiar que é abalada por esse mesmo patriarcado implacável. O resultado é um filme tenso e muito triste absorvido pela inevitabilidade do pesar. WEBRip no MakingOff.

Small town troubles, the difficulties of women, and a strong hint of incestuous desire, none of which end up being resolved, which, of course, is to the film’s credit, the ending succeeding in conjuring a poignant feeling about the uncertainty of the future.
